Okay, I lied: It’s not ALL of Middle-Earth, but it’s pretty damn near most of it. In one of the most impressive acts of nerdery I’ve ever seen, a whole bunch of Lord of the Rings/Lego enthusiasts built pretty much the entire landscape of Tolkien’s universe as part of BrickWorld 2011 in Wheeling, Illinois. I think the only locations not pictured here are Weathertop (where Frodo gets stabbed in Fellowship of the Ring) and Lothlorien (where Galadriel hangs out), but everything else from Hobbiton to Mount Doom itself is there. There’s been rather a lot of casting news and rumors for The Hobbit flying around of late; but hey, guess what? Peter Jackson himself has sent word that the major casting is pretty much done! Joining Martin Freeman, Ian Holme, Lee Pace, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Bret McKenzie, and all those dwarfs, we have Evangeline Lilly (so much for retiring from acting), Barry Humphries, Luke Evans, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Right on the heels of last week’s The Hobbit losses and gains, here’s two more pieces of casting news to chalk up on the “gains” side: New Zealand actor Dean O’Gorman has been cast as the dwarf FÃli following Rob Kazinksy’s departure, and Lee Pace will play the Elven King Thranduil. More
So hey, remember when The Hobbit was finally able to start shooting after getting delayed eight zillion times? Well, it’s possible that it may be delayed again, because Rob Kazinsky, who had been playing the dwarf known as FÃli, has quit the film for personal reasons. Boo! But on the other hand, Sir Ian Holm has been confirmed as playing an older version of Bilbo at some point in the film. Hoorah! More
Bret McKenzie, one half of the comedy-singer duo Flight of the Conchords, is no stranger to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. In fact, the New Zealand-born McKenzie appeared as an extra in the trilogy, named “Figwit” (“Frodo is great… who is that?!”) by the fans. With The Hobbit now shooting in NZ, McKenzie will reprise his role, in a sense — he’ll play not Figwit, but a Rivendell elf named Lindir. More
