So some crazy stuff went down in San Francisco in the 9 Lives of Chloe King. People died in unceremoniously random ways, families were revealed, and Chloe learned—again—that you just can’t trust the internet. More

FINALLY, we are getting to the question of whether or not Chloe should tell her mom about her powers. My answer: DUH YES PLEASE. Superman’s parents knew! Spider-Man’s parents…were dead. And then he inadvertently killed his uncle. And his aunt kind of hated his guts. AND IN THE END WHO WAS MORE WELL ADJUSTED? Actually, they’re both pretty messed up, but Superman has more actual super powers. Those web things Spider-Man has are supposed to be things he built, so I think his situation applies more here.

This week on Chloe King, in the episode “Dogs of War,” we discover a new species that Chloe may or may not be able to make out with, find someone she can definitely make out with, and see her approve her mother’s new beau for make out privileges. The show also shows off its mad skills at keeping storylines consistent, which is something important in every TV series, because how frustrating is it when people on television don’t act consistently? However, some things did pop out of the blue, or at least with not that much layover from “nothing” to “NEW PLOT TWIST OMG.” More
In this episode of Chloe King, everyone gets to play dress up (meanwhile Amy is like, “What took you guys so long?”) and goes on dates which range from “awkward” to “sweet” to “totally dangerous and stupid.” More
In the new episode of Chloe King, “All Apologies,” we see the development of Chloe’s friendships, more mysteries in the intentions of…everyone, and a potential claim by the show to be a very well-written and alluring superhero series. Considering that several ABC Family shows – cough cough Secret Life – tend to be melodramatic and conservative (in tone, not necessarily politically), perhaps Chloe King could be something of an exception? So, in the episode “Green Star,” we learn more about the mythos of the Mai when Chloe meets the San Francisco leader of the Mai, Jasmine’s mother. I saw a couple comments (which was awesome! I love comments!) about how readers of the book series know more about what’s coming. I haven’t read the series—but what I’m judging now is the television show. The reason Chloe King was adapted for TV was because it had a solid fanbase, but also probably because the executives at ABC Family expected the show to have a wider audience appeal. The show has to do well by itself for it to be a good show. More

The 9 Lives of Chloe King is a new summer show that airs Tuesdays at 9 on ABC Family. It stars Skyler Samuels (The Gates), who also has a Teen Vogue interview, Grey Damon (Friday Night Lights), and Alyssa Diaz (How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer). It’s about a girl with the powers of a cat, if that wasn’t clear from the title and poster. The show has great points–finally, a supernatural show centered around a girl who has supernatural powers rather than the guy she’s infatuated with! And bad points–basically, she’s got to have a level of self-control similar to Rogue from X-Men. More
