Belgian cyclist Gijs Van Hoecke has been sent home by the Belgian Olympic Committee after he was photographed stumbling out of a bar just a little on the far side of “too fucking wasted.” Belgian officials called the incident “deplorable,” adding, “this incident fortunately did not affect life in the Olympic Village and athletes trying to rest ahead of their competition,” as if one dude getting drunk at a bar could be that disruptive to the other athletes’ delicate sensibilities. Personally, I think it’s a little ridiculous that someone would be disqualified for doing something that’s perfectly legal, if a bit embarrassing, but it’s not like there aren’t bars in Belgium for him to patronize the 99% of the time he is not at an uptight sporting event he worked very hard to qualify for.
