Last night a new Miss America was crowned, twenty-three-year-old Laura Kaeppeler from the state of Wisconsin. She sang some opera, strutted across the stage in a white bikini and reminded us not to forget about kids with parents in jail. More

Last night 17-year-old Miss Nebraska, Teresa Scanlan, became the youngest woman to ever win the Miss America pageant. Good for her! She’s going to go to college (after she defers a year to properly fulfill her principle duty of signing autographs at county shopping malls and car shows) to become a politician, and the last time someone did that we ended up with Sarah Palin. So that’s good. More

Beauty pageants get a bad rep for turning out contestants who are seen as dumb cookie cutter hotties. But it looks like girls in the Miss America pageant are trying to push the envelope this year. Miss New York is running on a pro-gay rights platform. And just today we learned about a Miss America contestant who is actually bald.
That old idea of running as just a pretty face on a non-controversial platform seems to be going out the window. But are the judges on board with this transition? More
