“I kind of want to be a leader but, you know, then there’s all those responsibilities.” – Katy Perry at 18
These are the first words you hear from the mouth of Katy Perry in her new documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me. They come via a self-made video by an 18-year-old Perry, and when you’re talking about the skyrocketing career of this very unique 27-year-old, no one could have said it better. In just over a decade, Katy Perry has gone from sheltered Pentecostal God-fearing schoolgirl to record-breaking pop singing and songwriting sex symbol, and Perry herself is the product of that dichotomy. Many have accused Perry of relying too much on sex appeal to sell records, and other have seen it as a backlash against her strict upbringing. Essentially, critics and fans alike have wondered if Perry is trying to be a role model or a sex symbol, but her film seems to be proposing the idea that perhaps, she could be both. More
You’ve all read it: the article that pokes fun at, say, Angelina Jolie, for adopting a bunch of minority children because it’s “trendy.” Maybe you’ve read it on this very website (if so, I’m sorry). Well, guess what? Adopting black babies is not actually trendy at all in America, because racism, and this is a huge problem for children in need of good homes. More

Why should Kate Middleton get to have all the fun? Katrina Darling, a distant cousin of Kate’s, is trying to capitalize on the fame of her royal cousin. Last year Katrina was discovered to be a burlesque dancer in addition to her job as a portfolios analyst at Barclays and with her royal connections she became quite a sight to see. So now, in order to capitalize on this small connection to the ‘Kate Middleton Effect’, she has decided to quit the sensible banking job and pursue the dancing career full time. But don’t worry, she also has a reality show and a clothing line in development as well, according to The New York Post. More

Chelsea Handler is on the latest issue of Redbook Magazine. Yes, you heard me right. Chelsea Handler. The same woman who said, “There are two kinds of people I don’t trust: people who don’t drink and people who collect stickers.”Of course, she is right. That is just good common sense. But Redbook is a serious, grown-up woman’s magazine. I mean Michelle Obama was recently on the cover. Chelsea Handler likes to be known as a “Drunken Slut.” But the girl has a great career and she isn’t pulling up the ladder behind her it sounds like. She said: ‘I read this cheesy quote once: “Blowing out someone else’s candle doesn’t make yours glow brighter…’We women have to stick together… I’m very much about letting other people shine, because it makes us all shine brighter. I like having a fraternity. I like girls and boys together, misfits and underdogs – I love underdogs.” More
I had never paid any attention to the Kardashians until 2011, when two pieces caught my eye. The first was the Hollywood Reporter story on the massive endorsement empire the family had built, one that generated $65 million in profits last year.
The second appeared on Jezebel last week and detailed a scene from Khloe & Lamar – the third spin-off from the “Keeping up with the Kardashians” franchise, which follows Khloe Kardashian and her husband, L.A. Lakers player Lamar Odom. The scene starts with Khloe’s mother/manager, Kris, calling to talk about the “QuickTrim” endorsement deal. This is a diet supplement not approved by the FDA that all three of her daughters shill for. “I just think the way you are presenting yourself in the media is a little off-base and I feel like you and I need to have a chat about what you are doing to the brand,” she says. Sexts From Last Nights – Lauren Leto, who runs the very funny Tumblr Texts From Last Night, has some big problems with New York guys, who she calls “f*cking full of sh*t.” But asked about NYC’s incestuous media scene? “There’s good people to meet there.” Just not dudes, apparently.
