Questionable Choices: Mark Ballas Wears Guyliner

When I was in the tenth grade, my boyfriend Joe was in a band. They called their genre “horror punk” and all their songs were about The Lost Boys. Joe used to wear black Converse sneakers, tight black jeans, a black hoodie and eyeliner. I thought he looked awesome. That was 11 years ago. Now that I’m an adult, seeing Mark Ballas wear the same look doesn’t elicit quite the same feelings of hormonal lust. More »

Chaz Bono Doesn’t Need to Be Dragged into the Dancing with the Stars Same-Sex Dance Partner Controversy

Chaz Bono Doesn't Need to Be Dragged into the Dancing with the Stars Same-Sex Dance Partner Controversy

ABC’s decision to cast transgender guy Chaz Bono on the latest season of Dancing with the Stars has not been without its share of scandal: Some longtime fans say they won’t tune in this season, and former Pregnant Man Thomas Beatie complained to TMZ that the role of trans contestant was rightfully his. But Chaz shouldn’t have to trouble himself with the latest controversy: ABC’s refusal to bring in same-sex partners. More »

Dancing with the Stars: Did Mark Ballas Plagiarize His Chelsea Kane Samba?

Dancing with the Stars: Did Mark Ballas Plagiarize His Chelsea Kane Samba?

Last night, Mark Ballas and Chelsea Kane performed a samba on Dancing with the Stars‘ second to last show of the season. Now, a forum poster with the handle CassandraRedux on Television Without Pity says it’s possible that Mark plagiarized the routine from pro dancers Max Kozhevnikov and Yulia Zagoryuchenko. Both dances feature women in fringed pants dancing to the song “Hip Hip Chin Chin,” but perhaps someone who knows more about dance than I do can analyze the steps? More »

Dancing with the Stars: Chelsea, Hines, and Kirstie’s Final Freestyles

Dancing with the Stars: Chelsea, Hines, and Kirstie's Final Freestyles

It’s the finale! Although I hate how long and drawn-out the final two episodes are, I love how they force contestants to up their game. The freestyle dance in particular is a favorite, because after a whole season of Latin dancers struggling through waltzes and classic dancers forcing themselves through sambas, this is a chance for everyone to cut loose. Finalists Chelsea Kane, Hines Ward, and Kirstie Alley all brought energy to the floor for their freestyles last night. But who will win? More »

Dancing with the Stars: Ralph Macchio Says Goodbye as the Final Three Are Named

Dancing with the Stars: Ralph Macchio Says Goodbye as the Final Three Are Named

As far as ridiculously unpredictable seasons of Dancing with the Stars go, this one has been pretty predictable. Though Ralph Macchio got off to a great start and had the highest score several weeks running, it’s rare that the person at the top of the leaderboard in week one is the person who ends up winning the show. Ralph was starting to show signs of wear as he worked through an injury, and despite an audience who clearly liked him, he was voted off last night in a very respectable fourth place. More »

Video: Pia Toscano Performs on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Results Show

Video: Pia Toscano Performs on 'Dancing with the Stars' Results Show

Last night, American Idol castoff Pia Toscano performed on the results show of Dancing with the Stars. I often prefer results shows to actual episodes of DWTS, because we get to see the professional dancers together without gimmicks. Conveniently, the pro dancers who choreographed a routine to Pia’s rendition of “I’ll Stand By You” were Karina Smirnoff and none other than Pia’s rumored boyfriend, Mark Ballas. More »

Pia Toscano and Paul McDonald Have Mastered the Art of the ‘Idol’ Boot

Pia Toscano and Paul McDonald Have Mastered the Art of the 'Idol' Boot

Getting kicked off of American Idol sucks – you’ve lost your chance at the record deal prize offered up to the winner of the show. But every booted finalist’s role model is Jennifer Hudson, who rebounded from a surprise elimination in season 3 (eventual winner: Fantasia) to star in Dreamgirls and win an Oscar. The most recent bootees from this season of Idol, Pia Toscano and Paul McDonald, clearly got a class in good PR. The strategy? Immediately hook up with someone famous so that your name stays out there. More »

‘Dancing with the Stars’: Kirstie Alley Takes a Tumble and Chelsea Kane Does the Cha Cha

'Dancing with the Stars': Kirstie Alley Takes a Tumble and Chelsea Kane Does the Cha Cha

Although I had picked her as a potential frontrunner last week, this week Kirstie Alley didn’t have great luck on Dancing with the Stars. During her rumba with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy (which was supposed to be sexy, but…), Kirstie made a misstep and fell. To their credit, Kirstie and Maks recovered nicely and kept going, and this should set them up for a nice redemption arc next week. More »
