Being Crafty: Homemade Holiday Gifts That Don’t Suck

Being Crafty: Homemade Holiday Gifts That Don't Suck

We’ve talked a bunch about what to do if you don’t have any time to buy presents for the holidays. But understandably for most of us, it’s not time that’s the issue, it’s money. After all, with enough scratch you can have most anything sent to you on next-day delivery. Considering that none of us here at Crushable are billionaires yet (fingers’ crossed!), we’ve created a gift guide of presents you can make yourself that don’t suck half as much as the term “homemade present” would imply. Enjoy! More »

Make Your Own: Tron Makeup

Make Your Own: Tron Makeup

Are you ready for Tron: Legacy? There’s a lot to be excited about. The Daft Punk soundtrack! The neon LED spandex outfits! The Jeff Bridges coming back to vaguely reprise his 1982 role in the original Tron!

We are not exactly Tron experts. However, we have been crushing on the way the female leads look. So we tracked down the film’s head makeup artist to help us recreate the looks from the movie.

The first thing you will need to pull off The Tron look is LED lights (or glow in the dark tape). Once you have procured that and the proper skin tight outfit, follow these instructions we got directly from Rosalina da Silva, the makeup department head from Tron: Legacy. (Also, check in next week when we try out the looks ourselves.) More »

Make Your Own: Candy-Flavored Vodka

Make Your Own: Candy-Flavored Vodka

There’s no better gift to bring to a holiday party than alcohol. This is just a fact. But alcohol you made yourself? You’ll be the toast of the town! Luckily vodka-infused drinks are super easy to make, provided that you have a little while to let it soak (so basically, it’s not a last-minute party idea). You want to make candy libations? We’ll show you how, and try it ourselves, with results posted next week! More »

Make Your Own: TSA-Proof Outfit

Make Your Own: TSA-Proof Outfit

Recently, my well-groomed boyfriend and I went to Detroit for a wedding. Now, why anyone would board a plane planning to blow up Detroit is beyond me: that city is already unsalvageable until we come up with Robocop. Regardless, at every checkpoint, my suit-wearing BF was stopped by TSA employees for those “random spot-checks” we’ve been hearing so much about. Meanwhile, I went through every scanner wearing my Panda SpiritHood, which not one person asked me to take off. When my boyfriend was asked to open his luggage, I grabbed mine out of the pile he was carrying and told the officer, “That one is mine.” He smiled and let me take it. “I like your panda hat!” he called after me as I left my boyfriend to his pat-down. Make Your Own: Scrappy Thanksgiving

Make Your Own: Scrappy Thanksgiving

It kind of sucks that Thanksgiving break is so short in college. For kids that go to school on opposite sides of the country from their home, it’s often a struggle to decide whether its worth the price of a round-trip plane ticket when Christmas is just around the corner and lasts so much longer.

This goes for post-graduate life as well. Usually you can find a friend to tag along with for their family’s feast (don’t forget the pot!), but one thing’s for certain: you don’t want to be alone on turkey day. It’s somehow even sadder than being alone on Christmas (just claim you’re Jewish), though not as sad as being alone on New Years Eve. If you find yourself Thanksgiving plan-free, we have some tips to make your own version! Call up the rest of your orphan friends and have a feast, following these simple steps. More »

Make Your Own: Slutty Baghead Costume

Make Your Own: Slutty Baghead Costume

You may remember last week’s post titled “American Apparel Wants to Destroy Halloween” about the shop’s gallery of incredibly lazy costumes. Not convinced that the extreme half-assedness of their dress-up options was sufficiently addressed, the fine folks over at Am Ap took it upon themselves to send an “emergency costume” in a bag over to our offices. Looking over the t-shirt, dress and sparkly leggings combo, we would have gone with “abstract costume” instead, but who are we to question the logic of Dov Charney. Inspired more by the bag than anything else, we created what is sure to be a staple of Halloween costumes for years to come: Slutty Baghead. Follow our (admittedly also half-assed) instructions and make one of your own. More »

Make Your Own: Bedhead

Make Your Own: Bedhead

There’s nothing sexier than a girl who looks like she just rolled out of bed…even if that means her hair is full of knots and tangles. Don’t ask us why guys find this such a turn-on, they just do. Make Your Own: Napping In Public Kit

Make Your Own: Napping In Public Kit

Curling up on a park bench? Huddling beneath a chair at Barnes & Noble? Grabbing fifteen minutes of refreshing shut-eye in the produce aisle? We’ve done at all, for we are certified Public Nap Enthusiasts. In case you’re one as well, we’ve compiled a list of stuff you might want to carry if you plan on falling asleep in an uncomfortable public space:

A nice, soft hoodie: In an ideal world we’d be able to walk our metropolitan streets in giant pillow hats without feeling like castoffs from the Ren Faire, but unfortunately society is not quite at that level of nap tolerance. A rolled up hoodie is almost as good as a Sealy in a pinch, so make sure and keep one on your person at all times. (Unless you have comfy Phil Spector hair – If God has given you a natural pillow, skip the hoodie and count your blessings.) More »
