Art Crush: The Graffiti and Photography of Curtis Kulig

Curtis Kulig is an artist whose graffiti murals you may have already seen — he’s adopted the phrase “love me,” which he uses as a simple tag and additionally to create enormous murals composed of the two words repeated over and over. These epically-scoped graffiti works have popped up in public spots in places like NYC and LA. Curtis is also a photographer, and his work — simple stuff made up of friends and moments — is particularly resonant for me, a Los Angeles ex-pat living in New York who can flip through the artist’s blog and see side-by-side imagery from both cities. I was walking downtown from NYC’s Union Square on Friday and stumbled upon this tag spray-painted onto the side of an apartment building: a simple and elegant “Mila Kunis” in red, with no apparent explanation. So what’s the deal? Is Mila herself responsible for the graffiti? An obsessive fan? We say it’s the handiwork of Natalie Portman, masked and in a fit of post-pirouette delusion. It’s been a day of celebrity children getting into trouble with drugs: First we posted about Bobbi Kristina Brown‘s cocaine use and then we found out Theodora Richards, Keith Richard‘s 25-year-old daughter was arrested for a double whammy of graffiti charges and marijuana possession. Man, is it possible to grow up with a famous parent and turn into a well-adjusted, drug-free adult? (Not that we’re making the claim that evidence of drug use necessarily turns people into trainwrecks, but you get the point.)
