Holy shit, you guys. The Old Spice Guy (a.k.a. Isaiah Mustafa) saw the gallery of fan art of him that we posted a while back, and responded directly to our own Liana Maeby via Youtube. He even said her name out loud, lucky girl. (She’s totally going to freak out when she gets back from vacation.) Those of you still not convinced by Lionsgate’s casting choices for The Hunger Games should check out EmmilyTM‘s pieces on deviantART (via Down With the Capitol). Pulling from photo shoots and candids, she gives us a preview of what the makeup chair will do: Make the actors better resemble Katniss, Gale, and Peeta. We’ve already seen Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss thanks to the Entertainment Weekly cover, and she looked rockin’. But aside from a few paparazzi shots or old magazine shoots, we haven’t had the chance to really envision either guy as her two love interests. Often fandom is viewed as an insular, even selfish community dedicated only to discussion and art related to their specific series. As we saw with the whole Firefly fiasco last week, fans can drum up bad press by appearing way too single-minded.

However, those negative incidents don’t characterize fandom as a whole. For every natural catastrophe that has occurred over the past eight years, I’ve witnessed LiveJournal fan communities unite to raise funds for emergency aid organizations. Their latest efforts, centered in the multi-fandom, multimedia community Help Japan, are reminiscent of the actions that fans took after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. More »
