Don’t feel too bad about Discovery Channel giving Bear Grylls the boot, because he got back at them with a funny tweet, reminding us that he will be OK and it’s Discovery who lost out on a great reality TV star. More

Usually here at Crushable, we concern ourselves with the birthdays of celebrities who are usually actors, musicians, or some other entertainment industry personality. But you know, science-y people have birthdays, too, and luckily, today coincides with the birthday of someone who is both science-y AND pop culture-y: Grant Imahara of Mythbusters! This week is the 24th annual Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. Jeff Kurr has worked for the network for two decades putting together some of Shark Week’s most popular programming; this year, his special Great White Invasion kicks off the week last night. I met Jeff at a restaurant in midtown Manhattan. He showed up wearing a gold necklace with a shark tooth pendant (more on that later) and a giant bandage on his hand from where a precancerous mole had been removed. (When you spend so much time on boats, it’s important to know the signs of skin cancer.) Jeff talked to Crushable about why you should be careful about eating fish tacos in Mexico and how he wants to solve the mystery of shark sex. More
Want to live every week like it’s shark week? Good news, because next week is actual Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. And the gang from Georgetown Cupcakes (the shop featured on DC Cupcakes) made this specialty dozen just in time for your viewing party. The price is pretty steep, though – $39.95 plus $20 for shipping. More
We’ve known that Discovery was smart about pop culture when it picked up Sarah Palin’s Alaska last year, and even before now the network has jazzed up its annual Shark Week with celebrity promos and cult movies. But I have to raise a glass to this year’s ad, which sets fearsome shots of dead-eyed sharks chomping on boats and people to Lady Gaga‘s single “Show Me Your Teeth.” More
My god, have you guys heard that some crazy person named James Jay Lee has taken over the Discovery Channel building in Silver Springs, MD with explosives strapped to his chest? This is particularly terrifying because my dad lives/works right around there, but is just generally f*cked up because who holds Discovery Channel employees hostage?? The same guy who’s held protests there in the past, apparently, and whose manifesto includes lines like More
