Happy birthday, Harry Houdini! Two days ago was the master escapist’s birthday. Born Erik Weisz in 1874, he would have been 137 years old if he had discovered the secrets of immortality. Alas, he did not; weirdly enough, he died on Halloween night, 1926. Even weirder, Dorothy Young, one of Houdini’s former stage assistants, sadly passed away two days ago at the age of 103. In honor of Houdini, Dorothy, and the grand tradition of escapology, here are 13 amazing escape artists, both past and present, you probably haven’t heard of but definitely should know. More
Five years ago today, the first tweet was sent. What followed was a social media revolution embraced by some and derided by others, mostly over the notion of oversharing. But Twitter has also become a tool that breaks down the barriers between celebrities and their fans, and providing to-the-moment citizen journalism thanks to fast thumbs and Twitpics.
When it’s a celebrity’s birthday, we at Crushable usually come up with a gallery of the best photos of that person. So how do we ring in Twitter’s fifth year of giving celebs mouthpieces and bringing fans closer to their idols? With a gallery of the most TMI, unnecessary, astounding, controversial tweets! More
Blame Love Actually for making an epic, starstudded romantic comedy all about Christmas. Or blame American film studios, who have to copy everything that the UK does in the hopes of making a dime. The latter, with Garry Marshall as director, were responsible for 2010′s lukewarm Valentine’s Day, as well as its groan-inducing “sequel” New Year’s Eve, currently filming in New York City. Now movie producers are circling the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as the subject of the next holiday-centric movie. More
The American Cancer Society wants to celebrate every birthday that someone reaches — and what better way than to have celebrities and musicians emphasize how special those days are? With the More Birthdays campaign, you can send personalized birthday messages to your friends, whether they’re cancer survivors or not.
Each message is sung, which means that as cool as it is to have Justin Bieber, Rihanna, or Lady Antebellum in your e-mail or on your phone (you can choose to send a voice message), there’s something really sweet about Craig Robinson from The Office or Scott Caan warbling birthday wishes. More
I don’t know how I’m still here to write this, since the fury of Chuck Norris‘ roundhouse kick should have demolished me for forgetting the 71st birthday of the man who played Walker, Texas Ranger for eight years and inspired one of the greatest Internet memes. But the Bearded One is apparently forgiving, because I’ve been allowed to live another day, provided that I give you the best Chuck Norris facts. More
Today marks the 14th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s first airing on fledgling network The WB. The supernatural drama, Joss Whedon’s first effort as TV creator, debuted as a midseason replacement, a last-ditch effort brought in when a predecessor failed. In some ways, the show maintained that sense of riskiness for its seven-season run.
Buffy and I are like distant Facebook friends: We shared an incredible time together, but we’ve fallen out of touch as of late. I’ve forgotten its birthday and don’t have a wide-ranging cultural analysis to publish on the site. The best I can do is tell you about my own experiences with this series, and honor it on its special day. More
Happy Birthday Paris! She celebrated her 30th birthday with a mature, reserved birthday party. Just kidding! Guests sipped on absinthe while enjoying a petting zoo, complete with monkeys and sloths. (People)
You’ll be on this like white rice: Real Housewives of New York City star Ramona Singer launches Pinot Grigio line. (Perez Hilton)
Rumors suck…. especially when they’re started by your own parents. Apparently, Michael Lohan is to blame for Lindsay Lohan‘s rumored appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. (Crazy Days and Nights) More
Happy Birthday, Janice Dickinson! 56 years ago today, the “world’s first supermodel” (her words) was born. Or so I thought. At various times, her date of birth has been listed as February 15, 17, and 28, and her year of birth as 1951, 1952, 1954, 1955, and 1960. However, February 15, 1955 seems to be the general consensus, and makes sense, given her date of graduation from high school, so we’ll just go with that.
This past Sunday was my 25th birthday. While I don’t think of 25 as old, I definitely think of it as getting older, as I am now closer to 30 than 20.
At this sort of “in-between” moment, I got to thinking about what a difference five years can make.
I’m a completely different person at 25 than I was at 20, and although I’m thankful to have learned from my mistakes, there are a few things I wish I knew then that I know now. Like the following: More
