I watched the most uncomfortable episode of Girls last night. Like, when I say uncomfortable, I mean I watched the whole thing through my hands like horror movie. Things were viscerally uncomfortable with Hannah vs. the ass splinter/Hannah vs. the q-tip. Socially with Marnie’s Kanye sing-along. And ultimately, the sex between Adam and Natalya makes me seriously question the purportedly “feminist” thesis of the show. Did that feel like rape to anyone else? Things were dark. Call me crazy, but I really like the male characters on Girls. They’re cute, they’re funny, and they exemplify a diversity of experience that you don’t usually see on TV. Even when their characters are being jerks, I like the actors who play them. But I like them a little bit less after seeing them goof off with Uncle Terry, because every time someone gives him the “thumbs up,” a little bit of his creepiness rubs off on them. I know they were shooting with him for a feature in GQ Style and it probably wasn’t their choice, but ugh. Look at the pictures and see if you don’t agree. More »
