In Exciting News, Nicki Minaj Might Have Faked Her VMAs Wardrobe Malfunction

Nicki Minaj VMAs wardrobe malfunction 2014 holding dress together

I know the Emmys were last night, and you want to talk about all the shows you expected to win doing just that, but first we need to back up a day and talk about the VMAs again. Remember that moment in the opening number when Nicki Minaj came out after a wardrobe change holding her dress closed as if she hadn’t had time to close the zipper? Turns out she might have planned the whole thing. Nothing like a good conspiracy theory first thing in the morning.

TMZ reports that Nicki apparently did the same thing during performance rehearsals. According to witnesses, Nicki walked onstage Sunday morning wearing the same dress, also unzipped. She was also apparently wrapping her arms around herself in a “weird” way, “trying to manipulate it to see how much would be exposed.” There was even apparently a makeshift dressing room set up right off stage so she could change in time. Or I guess maybe so she could get her purposely open dress in the right position.

Nicki herself claimed it was an accident after the show,  yelling to reporters, “You all know I had a wardrobe malfunction,” and then adding, “We ran out of time getting the dress zipped up.” She also posted about it on Instagram, writing, “God is good. As long as a nipple didn’t come out to play, I’m fine.” Hmm, shoulda known. The lady doth protest too much.

And here we were praising how she handled the situation like a professional. But after this report, I can’t believe I didn’t see it before. Nicki didn’t say the zipper got stuck or was difficult to close, just that they ran out of time. If she really was right off stage, that’s kinda fishy. There’s also the fact that Nicki had a hands-free microphone while Jessie J and Ariana Grande held theirs. Sure, she had a lot of dancing to do during her first performance of “Anaconda,” but it also turned out to be pretty useful when she needed both her hands to hold her dress closed. I’m onto you, Nicki.

Ummm this is such a weird thing to do for publicity! And it’s not like she needs it, everyone is already talking about Anaconda.

I wondered why she picked changing her shoes over zipping up her dress. This makes it seem more plausible. Whatever, kudos to her for being media-savvy if she really did plan it

It also seems like she definitely could have done it onstage if she wanted to, with both hands free. Or gotten Ariana or Jessie J to help, both of whom were looking at her like, “Yes? You okay?”

Right? She could have finished zipping on her way out or something.

The VMA’s are the most pathetic night of the year. Nothing whatsoever to do with music – MTV jumped that ship years ago – now it’s just one insufferable, entitled lip-syncer parading around half-naked on stage dreaming up another tired publicity stunt and crappy performance to extend their 15 minutes of undeserved fame. I mourn for music.

Oh who cares? It was sexy.
