18 Celebrities Who Give The Best Interviews, According To Our Readers

Emma Stone thumbs up GIF(via)

We did an open thread yesterday asking for which celebrities our readers thought gave the best interviews, and I’ll be damned if you guys didn’t come up with some really great names in response.

I was driven to ask after watching Taylor Swift‘s interminable promotional tour for The Giverwhere she seemed oblivious to the fact that she has A. no sense of timing and B. no content to her stories. Before seeing all her interviews, I figured all question-answerers were created equal, but now I know that that is NOT SO. So in light of that, here are the best interviewees on the planet, courtesy of Crushable readers!

Did we miss anybody? Tell us what you think!

1. Tina Fey

ESPECIALLY when she talks about her kids. We could watch and listen to that all day.

2. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson

A few people suggested J-Law on her own, but I don’t always love how self-indulgent and rambling her stories are. She’s so famous now that she finds herself very interesting, and I think being seated next to Josh is a great way to keep her grounded, relatable, and fun.

3. Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick should teach this course at colleges, that’s how great she is at telling hilarious, mildly self-deprecating stories in interviews.

4. Tom Hiddleston

Honorable mention to Chris Hemsworth, whose interviews with Tom are adorable as well (as are pretty much any combination of The Avengers cast members). But since Tom is so charming and wonderful on his own, we didn’t want to undercut that by lumping him in with anyone else. From the moment he gets on the stage, this guy just emanates positive energy, and I couldn’t be any more in love with it.

5. Emma Stone

So adorable! The only celebrity who is so open and genuine that I feel like she can actually get away with keeping some parts of her personal life private.

6. Daniel Radcliffe

What an adorable little pocket human! Even though Harry Potter is one of the biggest franchises on the planet, he continues to be gracious, generous, and likable in interviews. What’s your secret, DanRad?

7. Rashida Jones

Rashida is so comfortable in front of the camera and so smart — she’s a Harvard grad, after all — and watching her think on her feet and make herself and her interviewer laugh is super entertaining.

8. Weird Al Yankovic

He’s so happy to be there, and his interviewers are so glad to have him. He’s famous, but not in an over-saturated way like some other celebrities out there, so you get the feeling that he’s genuinely glad to be talking to people whenever he goes on TV. Love it.

9. Emily Blunt

Anyone who can make Tom Cruise look good with just one promo circuit is an effing master of her craft, you guys. (And the British accent certainly doesn’t hurt.)

10. Robert Downey Jr.

RDJ is another sharp, high-energy guy who doesn’t let any dead air seep into his interviews. He has that perfect flat delivery and sardonic tone that some interviewers don’t get, but that pays off every time.

11. Kristen Bell

ALL I WANT TO DO EVER IS HANG OUT WITH KRISTEN BELL. She’s never given an interview that I haven’t wanted to follow up on with a one-on-one conversation. Possibly in my living room. Possibly with white wine. Hey let’s make it a game night. Bring Dax, bring Lincoln. Gang’s all here.

12. Chris Pratt

I’m a sucker for anyone who speaks so lovingly about their spouse like this, so I’m a goner anytime Chris does an interview, but he’s also just. so. funny. I love it.

13. Kate McKinnon

I mean how could she not be a great interviewee, because she’s so killer on Saturday Night Live? That show is the perfect training to be smart and funny and quick on the spot, and Kate always nails it.

14. Marilyn Manson

This is a strange recommendation from my co-worker Sam, but I shall trust her judgement and tell you that Marilyn Manson is good at interviews!

15. Kristen Wiig

I just love that this lady is up for any thing any time. She’ll dress up like someone she knows nothing about, sing you a song on the spot, or just do a genuine, lovely interview with her real hilarious self.

16. Robin Williams

Ugh, my heart. Before his untimely death, Robin was renowned for being a great interview subject, because he was always on. Heavy boots.

17. Lizzy Caplan

Oh man. I don’t know if it’s because she has the best stories or because she’s the best at telling them, but Lizzy is just interview perfection. She always nails her timing and never ever seems nervous.

18. Will Ferrell

As one of our commenters pointed out, Will doesn’t always do the most entertaining movies, but the guys sure does make entertaining choices in his interviews. Maybe the shorter form of late night is the ideal-sized dose of him.

YES TOM HIDDLESTON’S IMPRESSIONS VIDEO. I watch that at least twice a day.

    • A_Nicole

YES most of the ones I mentioned made it. and now I’m giggling at these videos that I’ve seen a million times ha

    • SparklyHairboyStylist

Great list very funny videos and Conan seems to get the best out of his guests. You need to keep doing these reader’s list. Love Anna, Emma, Lizzy, Emily, Jennifer but all us reader’s forgot Aubrey Plaza who gives great weird interviews. Glad I found this site.

Also Alexis, I will say that I have met Jennifer Lawrence in person and spoke to her for a bit while styling her in Atlanta and based on that conversation as well as me reading your writing and getting a feel for your personality I have to say Alexis that J-Law as you call her would probably be one of your best friends if you knew her. I give her credit she could handle my flamboyant gay ass. She is very quick witted, funny, up for anything, laid back but outgoing, a little snarky, and actually very bashful about her celebrity status. Maybe you will meet her one day and find out for yourself.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Oh yeah, Aubrey Plaza! I think I thought of her but didn’t include her because if she doesn’t have the right interviewer, she can come off as a little standoffish, y’know?

And i hope I do meet Jennifer one day! I can only base it off the impression I get from them in interviews, and there’s no question that I’m wrong some of the time! Glad to hear you’ve had such positive experiences with her!

      • Sile

Yeah, my impression of Jennifer Lawrence has always been exactly what SparklyHairstyleBoy described. In interviews Lawrence always comes across as friendly, goofy, gregarious self deprecating (it’s also exactly how she is always described in every print interview by the one interviewing her, btw). I love interviews with Jennifer Lawrence because they are unpredictable and fun. The interviews with Josh Hutcherson are delightful as well.

      • Sile

I don’t think I’ve ever come across an interviewer or fan, etc., who hasn;t had a positive experience with her! (LOL!).

      Justin Timberlake & Jimmy Fallon!

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Nice!

    • Napoleon

Vin Diesel is easily top ten

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Reeeeeally? An interesting and unexpected addition, but I’ll take it! Do you have an interview in particular that would blow my mind?

      • Napoleon

I recant my “top ten” claim but his interviews with Jonathan Ross, Ellen and “Guardians of the Galaxy were pretty cool. I think his Sam Smith cover was pretty mind blowing!

    • Willy Billy

Where is Johnny Depp? His interviews are always so funny and interesting.

    • Elaine

Great list, fully agree with most of them ;) I’m missing Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried though <3 They have great and hilarious interviews as well.

    • Jen TheTit Whipper

I think J. Law with ANYONE brings her down to normal.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

…should I ask about your new name?

      • Jen TheTit Whipper

HA HA HA HA. It stems from the BF Anthropologie post on M’ish. I decided if I’m ever a mom I’m going to be the infamous Tit Whipper that those who oppose public breastfeeding go on and on about (but like Bigfoot have yet to be seen in the wild). Then another reader challenged me to change my name. So now. I’m declaring, I will be a tit whipper. :)

      • Jen TheTit Whipper

Also you have to say it to the music of Willow Smith’s “Whip my hair back and forth”.

      • Tpce

JLaw is very funny in her interviews but can get a bit much I think do to nerves, she will even talk to herself during the interview telling herself stay calm and keep cool and worry. I think her anxiety in live interviews causes this and putting her with Josh, Liam or anyone else keeps her calm and you can actually see the real Jennifer who most people who have met her talk about. My two cents anyway.

Love your name as well, I will say tit whippers do exist in the world unlike bigfoot and you are very welcome to join them to disrupt the old establishment… hahaha.

    • Paige Livernois

I definitely would have added Aubrey plaza as well. But also the super funny and completely underrated Lauren Graham!
