If you came to work today hoping that someone would do or say something to prove that love is dead, then I have great news for you – Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson decided to try some time apart! I personally didn’t wake up this morning with that kind of optimism-death-wish, so this is hitting me particularly hard.
Tom and Rita have always been touted as the rare Hollywood success for their twenty-six year marriage and incredible support of each other. While other marriages crumbled around the, they always seemed above that, showing up to award shows and premieres on each others’ arm, gazing into each others eyes as if to say, “We are best friends, and you may rely on us to always be together.” And I did! I pinned my hopes on them for my own future happiness, and now it’s being dashed to pieces by the revelation that even their union isn’t perfect.
According to what a friend told In Touch:
“They hit a rough patch. They were leading separate lives. They just weren’t seeing eye-to-eye.”
Apparently they decided to take a month apart, so Rita stayed in their $26 million mansion in Pacific Palisades, while Tom went to the home of a producer friend in Malibu Colony before leaving for Egypt to begin production on his new movie A Hologram for the King, in Egypt. But according to another source, they did their best to disguise the fact that they were struggling, putting on a brave face in public:
“Although they attended social functions and walked their dog together, they were living in separate residences.”
Aghhhh my heart! There’s nothing sadder than a couple who loves each other and still can’t make it work. But hark! There’s hope! Apparently it isn’t that dire yet, and the temporary split achieved what it was meant to:
“Tom and Rita are not just husband and wife, they are best friends. It will take a lot to split this couple up for good.”
Eep, I hope so! Of course there are some couples who are better off apart, but I hope Rita and Tom aren’t one of them. But okay fine, I guess I can summon my maturity for long enough to say that I hope these two find happiness, whether it’s together or apart.
