Ariana Grande’s Newest Interview Proves She Hasn’t Decided On Her Personality Yet

Hey guys, do yourself a favor and don’t ask Ariana Grande a question for a while. She’s got an album coming out that she has to focus on, and she doesn’t have time to figure out which of her personalities you’re gonna like more.

At least, that’s the vibe I get from a recent Billboard interview she did. In the words of the author, Ariana is trying to ‘brush aside the idea that she’s a pint-sized Mariah Carey or a wholesome girl-next-door type’, so when she’s asked to name five peole who have inspired her since childhood, the girl is all. over. the. map. She’s never been super skilled with putting together words that aren’t also lyrics, and this is no exception.

It’s like she knows she wants to be taken more seriously as an artist, but she hasn’t decided how yet, so she just throws a bunch of edgy darts at a dartboard and waits to see what sticks. Here are the people she names:

  1. Helena Bonham Carter
Even though there’s nothing about Ariana that suggests Goth, she says she was “a very weird little girl. I was like a mini-Helena Bonham Carter.” Of course you were.
  2. Freddy Kreuger
Yeah that’s right! A fictional serial killer! “I always wanted to have face paint on or be wearing a Freddy Krueger mask, and I would carry a hockey stick around. For my fifth birthday party we had a Jaws theme and all my friends left crying.”
  3. India.Arie
“When I was fourteen, I wanted to make a straight-up, like, India.Arie record. Something really soulful.” Well…better luck next time, I guess?
  4. Madonna
Oh great! Ariana managed to find an idol who’s just as delusional as she is! Perfect! “She is strength, she is freedom, she is wisdom beyond anybody’s comprehension.” Okie dokie, whatever you say!
  5. Marlene Dietrich
Trying to get yourself an elderly fan-base, huh? “I have an obsession with all things vintage and classic and old-school, everything from Marlene Dietrich to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to Connie Francis.” I see you, girl.

I’m sure this is supposed to be an intimate peek at Ariana’s influences, but instead it just makes it completely transparent that Ariana still has no idea who she is, and is trying to rebel against that Little Miss Nice Girl stereotype. But hey, why fight it? That’s what you’re good at, and the sooner you embrace it, the better.

In my mind I was assembling a person based on the people she mentioned. Like the face of Freddy, the scary arms of Madonna, the voice of India Arie, hair of HBC and Marlene everything else. Voila! Ariana Grandemonster.

        Hahaha Grandemonster is hilarious.

    • L.M.S.

Does anyone really know who they are at 21?

    • .

Any here seen the (third, I think) episode of Jennette McCurdys new web series where she completely dissed Ariana through a fictional character named “Gloriana”? If not, you should, because it’s hilarious.

That entire series pretty terrible, but the shade toward Ariana was enjoyable.
