A Game Of Thrones Actor Accidentally Just Revealed A Major Spoiler About The Books

Sean Bean as Ned Stark giggling in Game Of Thrones GIFYesterday the internet was going crazy over a very spoiler-y Game Of Thrones fan theory that was making the rounds, and already it’s being inadvertently? intentionally? confirmed by a member of the cast. That was fast.

The theory is called R+L=J, and even though it’s new to me, it was apparently old news to the rest of the internet. Without being too stressed about spoilers, given that it’s an unconfirmed fan theory that’s apparently been out in the world for close to a decade, it’s the theory that Jon Snow is the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. There are a ton of pieces of supporting evidence…the strongest of all being that a GoT actor just gave an interview suggesting it’s true.

Sean Bean, who played Ned Stark on the HBO series until he met his untimely end, was speaking to Vulture about his current projects, and the interviewer, Jennifer Vineyard, found a way to work it back around to the show. She pointed out her theory that they might need Sean back on set for season five, given that the timing is right for Bran to see his father in flashbacks via the heart trees. Sean didn’t seem to know if those specific scenes will be happening, but he did have some other enlightening information to share:

“It’s a good theory! And that should happen, shouldn’t it? I’ve definitely got some unfinished business that needs to be resolved there. I’m obviously not Jon Snow’s dad. And you need that to be revealed at some point, don’t you? So Bran would kind of be the one having the flashback, and he would see Ned praying, right? And revealing those things? You never know what those guys are going to do with that. It’s got to be something special. But I’m into that. I certainly would be into that. Print that! Give them a nudge. [Laughs.] Hopefully I’ll get a call soon.”

Um hi sorry what? That was so casual that it actually makes me suspicious. The theory has been out in the world for so long that George R. R. Martin surely knows about it, and this might be him messing with us, trying to get us to think we have it all figured out so that he can throw us for a loop by the time the next book finally comes out.

Or it could just be a slip of the tongue, too, but I have a feeling these actors are far too canny for that. They’ve been able to keep bigger secrets on set than this one before, so I smell a rat. A very intriguing one, but still a rat.

He will never not die. Poor Sean.

Wasn’t everyone spoiled already about this theory? (Just genuinely curious.)

Everyone knew it was a theory, but this is the first time it’s been actively confirmed or denied.

Meh, I’m skeptical after Lena Headey’s “Stoneheart” tweet pic, I think GOT actors are being actively encouraged to mess with the fans ;)

I feel like this is going to be the Snape = not 100% evil theory all over again. A lot of people suspected it but if it is revealed to be true it will be treated as this massive twist that no one saw coming.
