Yesterday it was reported that Shia LaBeouf had checked himself into a rehab facility in Hollywood, following months of erratic behavior and a recent arrest for disorderly conduct. It turns out Shia’s not in rehab after all. But before you put away your hope and positivity and faith in humanity, you should read the statement Shia’s rep released explaining the situation. Just because Shia’s not in rehab doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a problem, and it also doesn’t mean he’s unwilling to seek help for it.
Shortly after reports emerged that he’d entered a facility, Shia was photographed out in Los Angeles yesterday. Here’s what Shia’s rep told Us Weekly yesterday concerning his situation:
“Contrary to previous erroneous reports, Shia LaBeouf has not checked into a rehabilitation facility but he is voluntarily receiving treatment for alcohol addiction,” the rep said in a statement to Us. “He understands that these recent actions are a symptom of a larger health problem and he has taken the first of many necessary steps towards recovery.”
Hopefully the fact that Shia is publicly admitting — albeit through a rep — that he has a problem, and that the problem is alcoholism, is a good sign. While the statement doesn’t specify exactly how Shia is getting treatment, new photos show him carrying what looks to be an Alcoholics Anonymous book, so that could give us our answer.
Shia’s been acting strangely lately, to say the least. After a seemingly never-ending plagiarism fiasco, an art exhibit that involved him crying in front of strangers, and various other incidents that the public labeled the behavior of a Hollywood douchebag, things recently started to look like they could be the result of a serious problem. Last week he was arrested for disorderly conduct, criminal trespass and harassment at a production of Cabaret. Shia’s also no stranger to alcohol-related incidents. He was arrested for intoxication at a Walgreens in 2007 and then again in 2008 for drunk driving. Here’s hoping he can get the help he needs.
