Let’s Get Real: How Can We Make Crushable Even More…Crushable?

cats working on computers Dear Crushable Fans, Crushable Hate-Readers And North West,

We just realized today that it’s been over a year since we last checked in with you to see how we’re doing. Considering the fact that we’ve written about Jill Duggar’s wedding 16 times in the last week alone, that seems crazy. Mostly because we love you! More than we love allllll the celebrities and scandals and fakelationships and side-hug snarking in the world combined. I know, I know, that’s a LOT of love. Almost as much love as Kanye West bestows upon himself each morning when he wakes up and remembers that he’s Kanye West. THE KANYE WEST!

Seriously though, seeing your comments on our posts makes our day. Even if the comments aren’t positive. Scratch that, especially if the comments aren’t positive. Nothing gets us more jazzed than reading that we’re the worst. (And that we need to go back to journalism school and also die and also pray for forgiveness and also kill ourselves.)

So with that in mind, we wrote this post for you to go comment crazy! Here’s your chance to tell us what you like about Crushable and what you want to see more of on Crushable. Is there something big that we’re not covering? A celeb we should be talking about on the reg? A TV show we need to start covering? TELL US! Help us help you to love Crushable even more. There’s nothing off limits and we’ll do our best to answer everything you ask.

Provided it’s not like, “remind me again where Alexis lives” and “how can I force Jill to watch Lifetime movies with me in my basement?” And yes stalkers, that image above is from our office. Did we ever tell you we were cats?

Should I start? Or am I biased?

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Go back to journalism school.

      • Jenni

On my way now…just waiting for a few of our favorite trolls to show themselves. COME OUT COME OUT WHEREVER YOU ARE! (too much?)

    • RKO

I JUST WANT TO SAY I LOVE YOU ALEXIS.

Please continue to write freely and be awesome bby.
      :)

      • Alexis Rhiannon

You just triggered an office blushing-frenzy. Thank you so much, I love it!

      • Jenni

Alexis was caught so off guard she actually accused me of commenting under a fake. AS IF!

      • Alexis Rhiannon

…this is true. I spun at her in my wheel-y chair and said, “Did you do something???”

      • Jenni

And I said, “don’t ever speak to me like that ever again you ungrateful journalism school rejct. It’s always Madame Jenni…did you do something???”

    • capoupascap

Hmmm….I’m probably going to get hammered but I am going to be 100% honest and say I kind of get sick of the SJ stuff. Not because I’m against any sort of SJ stuff but because when I comehere I want to read light celeb gossip, not what is and isn’t cultural appropriation, why it’s bad somebody doesn’t identify with the feminist movement etc. I mean yes, I actually don’t read it but when you only do 7-8 posts a day it does tend to dominate….

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Is SJ social justice?

      • capoupascap

        Yep

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Gotcha. Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from, because from my end, writing about that stuff is a slippery slope. I do it a little bit and it gets me all fired up and makes me want to do it a lot.

So bottom line — I can’t promise I’ll do it less than I do now, but I can definitely promise that I won’t do it more! And I’ll think hard when topics present themselves about whether I’d be writing it for me or for Crushable!

      • capoupascap

Cool sounds like a plan. And I’m only saying something because that’s very specifically what this thread is about. I’m not down for bringing drama into a comment thread! But yeah love you, love this site and I’m not going anywhere anyway.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Hurray! We love the feedback, honestly, especially from someone who’s proven themselves to be such a valuable member of our little community here!

      • Hillary511

At the same time, if you don’t want a feminist slant and light celeb gossip instead, plenty of sites offer that.

    • TJ

Crushable was the first website that I actually made a little profile for and actually comment on, and I love it! You can get dragged through the drudges of comments on other sites that are 500 comments and most of them are disgusting, negative, and thoughtless. I like the subjects you guys pick and the audience Crushable targets!

One thing I’d like more of is articles about good, quality TV shows or movies. You guys write a lot about crappy reality TV shows which I’m not really into. It makes my soul hurt too much. But I’d love more (GOOD) movie and TV stuff. Maybe it is just because I’m a TV junkie… Not ashamed!

As for the comment about social justice, I like those articles! It makes me think about the disconnect that often goes with celebrity and reality and what we let these people get away with just because they are famous. It often sparks some great debates as well. Celebrity news can be a great way to examine our culture and our faults because it provokes such strong reactions from people. I love it!!

Can’t go a day or two without checking in to Crushable!

      • Jenni

We’d love to write more about good TV shows…any suggestions for where we should start? Sometimes we forget about them when all the crazies dominate the news cycle. Also thanks for reading!

      • TJ

Oh I’m a little ashamed to list all my shows that I love buuuuuuut…. here goes: Doctor Who, The Good Wife, So you think you can dance, Mad Men, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Rec, Orange is the New Black, Psych, Supernatural, Sherlock, The Mindy Project, Orphan Black (which you guys totally got me started on!), Downton Abbey, The Voice… I have a life, I promise!!!

Also I know that you mention some of these and that some of them have been going for quite a few seasons…. It would just be nice to read about some TV that is…. quality. :) Someone had mentioned Orphan Black a few times so I started watching and WOW! I am hooked! So suggestions like that are super fun to read as well.

      • Nbl

You and I can talk Supernatural and Doctor Who. I know what you mean by good shows ;) Just a heads up, I ate the lifetime supply of Nutella last time I was riding the crimson wave so you’ll have to bring your own

      • TJ

YES PLEASE! I am just getting into Supernatural and am loving it! Ooh bummer dude!! I just picked about 20000 lbs of strawberries, so if I promise to freeze them and bring them along, do you promise to get more Nutella???? ;)

By the by, it took me quite a while to figure out what “riding the crimson wave” meant…. I’M SO ASHAMED!!!!

      • Nbl

Lol I got it from Clueless. Welcome to the Supernatural fandom, prepare for a roller coaster ride of emotions. What season are you on?

      • TJ

By just getting into, I literally mean just! First season. :) oh clueless! The mean girls of the 90s.

    • J_Doe5686

That gif needs a hamster giving a side-eye look that says “Are you really going to post that? ” So, please hire a hamster!

      • Jenni

Ugh, it’s hard to find one who will work for cash. They all just want carrots and wheels.

      • J_Doe5686

I have 3 hamsters willing to work for cash (and maybe sunflower seeds under the table *wink*) Millie has a beautiful head of. . . Full body of hair and has amazing spit treatment. You know what? I’ll just email you her resume.

      • Jenni

Great, send it to SeriousHires4Real@Crushable.com. K. Thx!

    • smorga17

Crushable is Amazing. Where else can you find celeb gossip (Jelena I just can’t get enough) with a personalized feminist perspective? The value you guys place on social justice really sets you apart from the mainstream. If you guys could cover more LGBTQ news/gossip that would be really awesome. Also, those Lifetime movie synopses. Jill, you win all the awards.

      • Jill O’Rourke

Thanks so much for your comment, and I’m so happy you enjoy my Lifetime posts! They’re a lot of fun to write.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

LGBTQ! Yes! On board with you! (And Jill is the best, agreed.)

    • fantasymother

See, I normally don’t do this… I mean go to celebrity sites. But you guys are hysterical. You write well and have a witty edge that always gets me laughing. I’m probably decades older than you, but here it seems to make no difference.

      • Jenni

What is age but a number that Madonna keeps trying to deny exists! Also, yes to the animal offer. Do you need our office address or will they just know where and when to show up?

      • fantasymother

The dog already knows where you are – he knows all (cue scary music.)

The cats will follow him as long as he keeps his tail up. ;-)

      • Jenni

This sounds like the Homeward Bound spin-off that I’ve been waiting my whole life to see.

      • fantasymother

Make sure you’re prepared for this. No exaggeration, my doggie weighs 130 pounds. He also tries his hand at guitar, so the Homeward Bound you’ll hear from him with have Paul Simon playing backup.

The cats do three part harmony and tambourines. You see, I was a hippie back in the day…

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Mooooovies!

    • C

I love crushable for gossip but I don’t understand the infatuation with pretty little liars. Isn’t it a show meant for 15-year-olds? Maybe I’m just one of the few that doesn’t watch it.

Sidenote: I used to dance with Ashley Benson when I was younger and had NO idea she was an actress till like 5 months ago.

      • Jill O’Rourke

Do we have an infatuation with Pretty Little Liars? Is this how it begins? When you don’t even realize it’s happening?

      • TJ

Hate to break it to you, but I think you do! :) It doesn’t really come up anywhere else for me but Crushable and my 16 year old cousin. Sorry!

      • M_G

Careful, Jill. You are dangerously close. — A

      • Jill O’Rourke

        AHHHH!

    • Hillary511

This might be coming from my Soc major/gender studies background, but I’d love to see you guys do stuff in a macro sense. You do it occasionally, and I enjoy it when you do. Trends with things like weight loss, pregnancy, language used with celebrities on the red carpet could be really interesting.

Kind of along those lines, I think the hate or love of specific celebs does better when it is put in that context. Like I personally agree with you guys on most things Swift, but it works better when it comes off as less of a judge of character and more this is really bad for feminism. I think that’s become the case lately, which is great.

Also, I don’t get your guy’s Demi Lavato fascination. I do think she’s fairly talented and can be a good role model in certain aspects, but there’s plenty negative you guys tend to gloss over. You also seem to give her the get-out-of-jail-free card for being young, but it’s clearly not given to everyone.

So yeah, lemme know if you’d like any clarification.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

I love the macro stuff! Sometimes we shy away from it because we think we’re the only ones obsessed with the way the internet / media functions on that level, but if you’re into it, I bet other people would be too! Thanks for the feedback!

    • cib

I love that this site has a balance of snark, shallow, and serious topics–I can feel fluffy without feeling dumb, if that makes any sense. You’re pretty much the only gossip site I read!

The one criticism I have is the listsicles. I try not to click on them, out of principle, because the form is so overdone right now. I like to see one every so often, but I think you may have been hitting them a little hard lately.

      Keep up the crushable goodness!

      • Jenni

People on the interweb seem to love getting their words broken down into numbered lists though! We do try to make ours stand out by making them funny and informative and not total “this will blow your mind to pieces” hyperbole, hope that shows.

      • Jenni

Also meant to say that this, “I can feel fluffy without feeling dumb” is pretty much our mission statement. You can enjoy pop culture without feeling bad about it!

    • Nbl

I was directed to this site once and haven’t stopped coming back. I love the ladies points of view here and I’ll admit to being slightly stalkerish. Once I read that article I looked back at some old articles and I was dying with laughter. The man thought I found funny videos on YouTube. He didn’t laugh as hard as me. What really gets me coming back is the authors answering questions and providing clarifications about their post. You almost never get that on other sites and it can lead to some really fun (and funny) “debates”. I also love the little community of regular posters. Whenever a troll comes lurking in we ban together to make them look and sound a lot more stupid than they already are (in some cases that’s really hard, the bar being so low and all). I like to think of it as the giant robot that forms when the Power Rangers team up. Plus, most people respect the others point of view. And you get my insane sense of humor. I’m sure there’s something I can give constructive criticism on but my fiancé bought me a lovely massage for my birthday that I cashed in today, so I’m feeling SUPER mellow to everything right now.

      • markmywords

        Good for you :-)

      • Olivia Wilson

We love having you be a part of our internet Power Ranger robot :)

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Oh I love this! It’s one of my favorite things ever, knowing that even if we get caught up in workday stuff and aren’t able to defend ourselves on posts that are picking up troll-y comments, you guys always have our back. It’s awesome.

    • M_G

I thoroughly enjoy the current content and the pool of regular commenters (both the sane, rational people and, of course…..*narrows eyes*….well, you know….). I don’t have time for a whole lot of web surfing during my week (hey, these papers in my office aren’t going to push themselves!), but I always make time for this site because it’s so enjoyable. Snarky, clever, and dry humor is my favorite, and you all have that in spades. As far as suggestions, to reiterate what other people have said, I would love to see more reviews of TV shows. Some suggestions of the top of my head: Catfish on MTV, Witches of East End on Lifetime, and Switched At Birth on ABC Family. These are some of my favorites, but there are a lot of good and so-bad-it’s-good shows to choose from.

      • Jenni

What about The Fosters…I just got into it and I have no one who wants to talk about it with me. Mostly because I’m not friends with many 12-year-olds.

      • M_G

Oooh….see, Mondays are the only night I binge watch TV (because Mondays are….well, Mondays), and unfortunately my 9-10pm slot has already been claimed by Major Crimes on TNT.

      • Jenni

What do you possibly do the other nights? Socialize?

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Jenni, typo? I don’t recognize the last word in your comment.

      • Jenni

Yeah, sorry, my cat paws sometimes make it hard to type.

      • M_G

Socialize? With….people?? IRL?!?!?!??! *shudders* No no. Monday is binge-watching TV, Tuesday nights I listen to my police scanner (you know, in case they need me), Wednesday is physical fitness day (i.e. – I switch to lite beer for the night), and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is spent trying to solve a rubik’s cube.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

We talk about catfishing (as the verb, not as the show) pretty much every day in the office, so I’m betting we could work that in.

      • M_G

It’s just…..I’m fascinated by the psychology of the show and what people are willing to do/accept in the name of “love”. Like, “OF COURSE I’ve sent her money, my credit card number, and co-signed the loan for her new car. We are in love! We are soul mates! We are going to be together forever!!!”…”What’s her last name?”….”Umm, not sure…..”

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Agghhhhhhh so much stress.

      • fantasymother

        Rational people unite!

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        On Wednesdays we wear pink!

      • M_G

Damn it, Alexis! I was literally about to post that. GET OUT OF MY BRAIN!!

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Neverrrrrrrrr!

      • M_G

*begins thinking exclusively about Justin Bieber*

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Hahaha sorry about that, it’s a constant thing for me, and I want all brains to be like mine!

      • fantasymother

        Whoa, that’s cruel! LOL!

      • M_G

Tough love is never easy….. ;-)

      • fantasymother

        You’re right, so here goes…

Picture Bieber at 80, what’s left of his white hair standing straight up and hidden inside a ratty baseball cap. His jowels hang down to the tattoos on his chest. His upper arm sleeves wiggle when he moves them. Hanging onto his walker, he shuffles way from the mop bucket and starts to croon, “Baby……,” just before the guards escort him back to his cell.

      • M_G

        HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Okay, you win.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        :(

      • fantasymother

        *looks down*

        Good thing this is Thursday.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Same. Did you at least remember to wear red, white, and blue for the USA match?!?!?!?!?!?!

      • fantasymother

Yup! I even had my dentures painted! GO TEAM GO.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Yasssssss!

    • PaintingChef

If you were to stop writing about Justin Beiber, do you think he would go away?

      • Jenni

If we had that kind of power, we wouldn’t be working here.

      • PaintingChef

        Haha! Fair enough.

      • Jill O’Rourke

That actually sounds like a really interesting movie premise, where celebrities literally fall off the face of the earth if you stop talking about them. Spike Jonze would probably direct it.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Oooh I would watch that. Robin Thicke would be going door-to-door.

    • MCR

Thanks for asking. I normally can’t stand celebrity news sites, but I enjoy your usually funny take on this ridiculous business. Nobody else has quite the same approach.

I’m unfamiliar with the majority of the TV shows and stars you talk about, so I skip a lot of your articles unless they also refer to a subject or concept I’m interested in. I don’t follow reality TV, for example, or amateur talent shows, or Justin Beiber. Not that you should change your content if most people like it; just saying, I’m a fan who can only relate to a small percentage of your articles.

I’d like to see the site aim some of its satire not only at celebrities, but at celebrity culture and the business interests that are built on it. Ridiculous stars are mocked very adeptly, but I never see mockery of the equally ridiculous gossip press, for example, or the cheerfully misogynist fashion press who cover red carpet events. You even seem to have a soft spot for the tabloids and sometimes use them as sources of information – not ironically but as if they were real sources; and you often criticize stars who complain about being stalked by paparazzi, but not about paparazzi who cause traffic accidents, break privacy laws, and try to get photos by calling out to stars that they know where their mother lives. I’d love to see you spread the wealth around a bit.

I also wouldn’t mind if you laid off the Duggars for a while. The articles were funny at first, but now they’re getting repetitious and the doggedness is a little much. Aren’t there other famous extremists you could be scrutinizing?

      • Jenni

Thanks for all the feedback! We can definitely do a better job of covering things like the paps. They are kinda the worst and we did cover it a bit from the Kristen Bell perspective. But we’ll do our best to do it more!

In good news for you, now that Jill’s wedding is over, the Duggar news well is about to run dry. But we cover it so closely because it’s an extremely popular topic in our site and almost always gets tons of readers clicking and commenting.

    • Kate

I’m trying to come up with constructive criticism but at this point, I just want to apologize for stalking your site, like Nbl said. I sometimes have to stop myself from commenting on articles that you put up 2 minutes ago so that I don’t give myself away. I love that you collectively have a really refreshing and mostly levelheaded perspective on much of the Hollywood culture AND that when you get criticism from a reasonable commenter, your responses are usually diplomatic without being too apologetic. You guys are just honestly the best. #CRUSHABLE4EVA

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Whaaaaaaaat please continue to stalk us forever, that’s amazing feedback.

      • Jill O’Rourke

        #THANKYOUFORSTALKINGUS! Also #NODISRESPECTTOBENAFFLECK.

      • Jenni

        Marry us. Sister wives style.

      • Olivia Wilson

Don’t fight the feeling, comment one million times if your fingers are into it.

    • Discussion

I like some of the articles but it seems like anyone who disagrees in the comments gets a snarky reply back from the writer (vs a discussion).

      • TJ

You’re WRONG and go crawl back UP your mother!!!!

        Just kidding. :) Couldn’t resist!

      • Alexis Rhiannon

I can see how it might seem that way, but we try to match our response to the tone of the comment. So if someone makes a critically constructive comment (like this one!) that’s polite even if it disagrees with us, we respond in kind.

But if people insult us as people or use inappropriate language, I personally don’t see a big incentive to take the time to respond as if that’s a respectful conversation. I make a point never to resort to insults myself, even when I’m being threatened or called terrible names, but I’m also not gonna sit back and be passive. If I’m attacked, I defend myself. If I’m not, then I don’t! Simple as that.

But that said, if you’re not feeling listened to, it’s possible that I haven’t understood your tone or that we’ve gotten our wires crossed somehow, so please feel free to point out specific examples where you think I went over a line.

    • Hannah Hunt

This came after I just decided to stop reading this site, and I mantain my desition, this site is just tacky, bad written, and everything is mostly a copy-paste from buzzfeed and other mainstream media. You guys seriously need to put some more effort, because the lack of it shows big time, and it’s just painfull to keep watching.

      • Jenni

        *decision
        *badly written
        *painful

Other than that, couldn’t agree more!

      • Hanna

Geez, sorry. English is not my mother tongue.
