The Only Thing More Offensive Than Alan Cumming’s Photo With Terry Richardson Is His Excuse For Posting It

Alan Cumming Eye Roll

Yesterday, Alan Cumming posted a photo just hangin’ with accused sexual predator Terry Richardson after a Harpers Bazaar shoot for which he received quite a bit of internet backlash. Which you and I and most normal people with a functioning internet connection probably could have seen coming ten miles away with our eyelids taped shut. But apparently, Alan has real estate in the giant rock industry and spends his free time avoiding huge news stories like the sexual assault accusations that have been leveled against Terry since the dawn of man.

The tweet that started it all is the following one, where Alan jokingly poses as Terry, and Terry poses as not-a-creep. Spoiler alert: they switch glasses.

Understandably, the tweet offended many of Alan’s followers. Because, hellooo, who doesn’t know about the allegation muck Terry has been swimming through in recent years? Or, how about in recent days, following that profile of Terry in New York Magazine, which was under fire for suppressing the voices of Terry’s alleged victims? Well, if those questions weren’t rhetorical, the answer would totally be “Alan Cumming.” Because, in response to the legion of disappointed fans who replied to the tweet, Alan played the “Oopsies, I didn’t know!” card.

I have a couple of issues with this, the first being that he’s since deleted the damn apology tweet. Maybe he did it because he used the word “appraised” in a brand new way that no one’s ever seen before. But it’s more likely that he’s trying to forget all about this, as he’s also deleted the original photo. And, it’s like, great job owning up to your mistakes! When you delete things from the internet, no one ever remembers and no one ever ever takes a screen shot.

The other is that “I didn’t know” is a ridiculous excuse at this point, considering the fact that Terry’s ultra-skeevy aesthetic has become one of the most recognizable in the world. He shouldn’t have had “no idea” because it’s sort of everyone’s jobs, famous or not, to know a thing or two about the people they choose to work with. And these allegations are a pretty huge part of Terry’s photography career and Google search results.

It’s obvious that one of the main reasons why Terry is able to get away with as much as he has is that he’s still such a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. But there is a level of accountability that you have to accept when you and your peers are almost directly in charge of whether or not a repeatedly-accused predator continues to get work. If other influential people elected to say “no” more often than they say “I didn’t know!” (or worse, “I didn’t care”) we might be able to finally rid ourselves of at least one overly-powerful creep. And that’s a step.

Ugh, I hate when people I like do SUCH STUPID THINGS!

    • Olivia Wilson

Every celebrity should carry around a tiny card that says “Stop it. Stop it right now.” that they take out whenever they’re going to do a dumb thing.

    • Elizabeth Aspen

The problem is celebrities ARE dumb. They do the dumb things first and then slap their heads and go, ‘Damn! The CARD! Where’d I put that thing?’

  • JenH1986

I always think of Woody Allen when I read/hear about Terry Richardson. Everyone knows, but few have the balls to stay away because these men could hurt their career or not use them in movies/shots etc. I don’t get it.

    • Olivia Wilson

      It really sucks.

  • gusto

Selena Gomez just did a shoot with him, according to her instagram. Why the hell does this guy have so much power in the industry!

    • Isabelle

Because he takes very nice photographs

    • CMJ

Because his daddy was a famous photographer.

    • Isabelle

Terry does take nice pictures. I seriously doubt anyone would be given big opportunities unless they had some type of talent to back it up with regardless of what connections they have.

    • jen27

His pictures are trashy, unflattering garbage. And the entire industry would like to shake hands with you for being willing to pretend that they are clearly talented and not just suckling from mommy and daddy’s teat.

Are there some children of Hollywood who turn out to be talented individuals? Of course. But there are also a ton of people working in Hollywood who would never and should never have gotten anywhere near fame and gross, perverted, POS, untalented and unoriginal hack Terry is on the top of that list.

    • Isabelle

Well talent is subjective and just because someone might have come from a famous family doesn’t make them any less talented. I agree with Lena Dunham when she said being hostile about someone coming from a famous family is just trying to belittle their talent in a very jealous way. Obviously you don’t like him and I honestly don’t care. He does appear to look a bit creepy but I’m glad I’m not so easily swayed.

    • jen27

I’m not swayed by how he looks at all. I’m swayed by the fact that he is a sexual predator who uses his connections and power to assault people.

I’m glad that you don’t care about sexual assault victims.

    • Isabelle Rose

Just because he’s an alleged sexual predator, doesn’t make him a talentless photographer. I’m glad I’m not simple minded.

  • LittleOne23

It could be that Alan genuinely did not know who TR is, being that he (Alan) is not American and so would not be familiar with American photographers. It’s also likely that his PR person or whatnot booked him for the shoot and all he was told was when/where to show up. Not trying to completely defend him, but just offering some thoughts about how this could’ve happened.

    • jen27

He’s been living in NYC and doing the revival of Cabaret since at least the beginning of this year. That defense is super lame.

    • Olivia Wilson

Good point. It’s hard to convince me that, as an entertainer, he heard nothing about these allegations against Hollywood’s BFF.

    • MCR

Maybe he takes the word “allegations” literally.

    • Isabelle

      As he should

    • Olivia Wilson

In which case he still would have known about the controversy and that apology would not be truthful.

    • Olivia Wilson

It’s true that those are possibilities. But I don’t think they’re even proper excuses as for why he wouldn’t have a clue about someone he’s, not only agreeing to work with, but essentially helping promote.

  • Isabelle

I don’t know the details about his case either and I’m American. It’s more than likely there is more than few of us out there that don’t care about the details of, I’m guessing, a highly sensationalized case.

    • CMJ

      No. No, it’s not.

It’s actually not sensationalized enough, in my opinion. Especially considering he is one of many in the Fashion Industry that pulls this kind of manipulative BS with young models.

    • Isabelle

I don’t doubt that young models are taken advantage of but because of the intense PC culture we have and doing so much for show, I doubt so many famous people would still be seen with him. There are many other great photographers out there. Jared Leto and Lupita don’t needed to be seen with him for attention and need to gain attention by getting their pictures done by him especially with the year they’ve had. Just to show two examples.

  • Chris

I don’t see what the big deal is, really. Yeah, Terry Richardson is a creep. No one would deny that. But Alan Cumming is a grown-ass man. He’s not locking young kids in a room with TR and throwing away the key. He’s an adult male hanging out with another adult male. Even in his caption, he’s hardly promoting anything or forcing some inappropriate content on minors. They switched glasses for Christ’s sake. That’s all I got from this.

    • Olivia Wilson

Alan Cumming and every other influential person who agrees to hire or to photograph with Terry is helping to keep him in a position of power, which he has been accused of abusing on multiple occasions. They’re by no means the entire problem, but I feel that they are at least a part of it.

  • janey

I’m hanging on to just being glad that Alan apologized and deleted it. I’ve become such a fan of his and don’t want this incident to interfere with something I enjoy so much.

  • profnickd

Meh. The girls who’ve posed with Richardson over the years loved it — the slut-look is in, has been for a long time. The butt-ugly feminists, they hate him.

    • Olivia Wilson

And sexual assault apologists can’t get enough of him!
