North West Needed A New Excuse To Frown In Photos, So She Got Her Ears Pierced

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian posing for Vogue spread with naked North April 2014I don’t want to alarm anyone, but we came dangerously close to getting a photo of North West in which she wasn’t frowning. We may never know how close, but thankfully the crisis was averted at the very last minute by getting her ears pierced. Phew.

It was apparently some sort of present for North’s first birthday this past Sunday, because she wasn’t seen wearing earrings at her parents Kim Kardashian and  Kanye West‘s wedding just a month ago. She was seen with a big ol’ pout across her entire face, though, as always, so it’s nice to see her staying consistent, if also sleepy. (Mean mugging all day all night is exhausting, y’all!)

And it’s also nice to see Kimye helping North out with keeping that scowl going 24/7. I can’t imagine getting your ears pierced at age one feels particularly good or festive, so they were obviously providing much-needed support to get their girl through her entire birthday with her no-smile record intact. Mission accomplished! The streak continues!

Like all babies, North must have been begging nonstop to get her ears pierced. After all, that whole ‘cute as a button’ thing really only lasts a few months, if you’re lucky, and any rational infant will have already begun planning how to become pretty after that point. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there, and if you’re not a hot baby, you might as well hang up your diaper and retire, because NOBODY WANTS TO LOOK AT YOU.

Sorry, I got a little intense there for a second. I’m just so overwhelmed with relief that we’ve killed these two birds with one stone (likely a diamond). Let’s all say a quiet thank you to the Good Lord Of Pop Culture in the sky, who has answered our prayers by giving North a renewed reason to be so grumpy…as well as simultaneously making sure she has her pretty-baby game on lock by her first birthday, all via a pair of earrings.

Praise Yeezus.

I got my ears pierced as a baby. I’m sure I screamed bloody murder at the time but when I got older I was grateful for it, because my friends who got it done at ages they could remember were terrified and talked about how painful it was. I’m a big wuss so I’m happy I got them done at an age where I can’t remember the pain because I love earrings haha. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with piercing babies ears so long as it’s done in a safe and sanitary way.

Same here, got mine done when I was very young. My mom kept my first earrings which were these pretty sapphires set in gold and gave them to me again when I was 16, which was a pretty cool gift.

        Were you born in September??

      • Alana Vincenza

Nope, my mom just liked sapphires more than topaz. I hateeee my November birth stone.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Oh I love topaz!

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Yeah…I guess my issue with it is, they grow up without ever having the choice to get their ears pierced or not. All parenting styles are different, but I think if it were me I’d wait until the child was old enough to make that decision for his or herself.

      • So

True but if she really hates having her ears pierced she can just stop wearing earrings and they’ll close up eventually. I think that’s why I think it’s not really a big deal unless they get infected or something. Piercings are not like tattoos that are permanent.

      • Blue Orion

They don’t always close up, though. Some do, some don’t.

      • J_Doe5686

I never thought of it like that. Where I come from baby girls get their ear pierced by a nurse before leaving the hospital. I don’t know if it’s still the same now but that is/was the norm.

      • AnnH

Eh~ I don’t understand that at all. So what if kids didn’t get to decide to have their ear pierced ? They are just tiny holes, it’s not like it changes anything once you’re old : the ear functions just the same, you can decide to wear earrings or not, and there is no social stigma around pierced ears (at least not that I’m aware of). If parents want to do it for any number of reasons, I don’t see the issue.

    • Nbl

Did she get it done by a 16 year old at Claire’s?

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Yeah, she took herself on a girl’s trip and just did it on a whim.

    • Myndee

I’d worry about her tugging on her ears, it getting caught in a blanket, or getting mugged. She’s almost old enough now to go out and get her own reality show now, complete with staged paparazzi

      • Elizabeth Aspen

Seriously though, she could take them out and swallow them, too. Then she’d have every right to cry like a baby, since she is one, unlike her mom, who is supposedly an adult, but cried like an infant when she lost a diamond earring in the ocean.

      • NYCNanny

Oh please. I got my ears pierced was (for the first time) at 11 and f’ed them up royally. I actually had to get my ears repierced like 4 times cause i kept screwing it up. It can happen at any age.

    • J_Doe5686

I got my ears pierced as a newborn in the hospital. My mom bought me those little gold/diamonds studs for kids. They were cute but I lost them as a tot because I liked to play around with them. Next thing you know my mom buys me toddlers size gold hoops and super glued it closed so I wasn’t able to take it off and play with them. Sad. But at least I give Kanye and Kim kredit for waiting a year. Hopefully they would stick to baby size studs and hoops, nothing fancy.

      • wispy

Superglued them shut!! How did you ever get them out??

      • J_Doe5686

Back then, with the weather and swimming lessons and dirt and chlorine and whatever else (I don’t know! ) the superglue would cracked and get loose. So my mom would have to superglue them shut AGAIN! Until I turned 10 and I got stickers earrings. Pretty cool!

      • wispy

sticker earrings!! I forgot all about them! They were the coolest!

      • J_Doe5686

I know, right! Every day a different pair of earrings! It was awesome!

      • Elizabeth Aspen

I know an extremely dumb woman who was too cheap to shell out $8 to go to Claire’s to get her ears pierced, so she literally took a pair of scissors and just snipped her ears open like a total asshole. They’ve never healed and she has big slits in her ears to this day and she did this a good 30 years ago.

      • J_Doe5686

        OMFG! WTF?

      • wispy

omg that is horrifying!! I don’t understand how she thought slitting her ears open would hold an earring??

    • NYCNanny

Oh please. Get a grip. Babies all over the world get their ears pierced. It hurts about as much as a booster shot. No, it’s not the most practical thing for little kids, but it’s hardly child abuse or whatever you say it is. It’s wayyyyyyyyyy less damaging than circumcision, which I’m sure you’re all for.
That being said, i wouldn’t get my little child’s ears pierces cause I think it looks stupid. And I’m farrrrr from a kimye fan.

      • guest

i too am far from a fan. i’m more of a kimye toaster. But to the point, i got my ears pierced at 6 months as most indian children do. it’s not an abnormality at all

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Would love to see the paragraph where I referred to it as child abuse! Looking forward to hearing from you.

My Mom always said I could choose to have my ears pierced when I was 7. Oh boy, that birthday couldn’t come fast enough! I made her take me first thing in the morning. It did hurt, but I felt like such a big girl because I got to make the decision for myself. I even got to pick the earrings and it was part of my birthday gift.
If I have a little girl, I’ll let her made the decision for herself too, I don’t feel like it’s my right to force it on her. Just my opinion. =)

I just love that the writer of this blog likes to be oh so sensitive about the Kardashians mocking other cultures but she herself has no problem mocking the customs/cultures of others. I’m from a Southern European background and this behavior is completely normal. I had my ears pierced at around that age and I would hardly consider it abuse. Just because some people like to hang on to their FAUX-PURITANICAL ideals, that doesn’t give them the right to project those beliefs on others.

The Kardashians are horrible people but this is really scrapping the bottom of the barrel for a story.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

I don’t know that I agree with ear-piercing being a custom, per se…certainly not an American one, which is the issue at stake here given that both Kim and Kanye are American.

      • Zelda Z.

        What is an “American” custom?

        One that you follow?

That’s a rather ignorant comment to make when you take in to consideration that the United States is a country built by and made up of IMMIGRANTS.

Quite a few Americans still hold on to some of the traditions and customs of the countries their families originate from.
