As of last night, Tracy Morgan remains in critical condition in a New Jersy hospital intensive care unit, but the truck driver who allegedly caused the multiple vehicle crash has been charged. Local law enforcement stated that Kevin Roper has been charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto in connection with the accident, following a preliminary investigation. The driver is claiming he didn’t see the traffic in front of him had slowed down, and he hit the rear of Morgan’s vehicle. Police are reporting that Roper had fallen asleep at the wheel in the moments before the collision.
One of Tracy Morgan’s friends and fellow comedians, James McNair (who went by the stage name Jimmy Mack), who was a fellow passenger in the limo bus Tracy was riding in, was unfortunately pronounced dead the scene. Morgan and his assistant, Jeff Millea, were airlifted to a hospital in New Brunswick. Tracy’s ex-wife and mother of three of his four children, Sabina Morgan, offered a brief statement:
“He’s not in good shape. I’m traumatized. I’m so upset. I can’t believe it. It’s like I’m in a nightmare.”
Ugh, my heart hurts reading that. Sabina said he was suffering a broken leg among other injuries, but that his doctors are hopeful that he’ll recover. Such a tragic and sudden chain of events all around. Our thoughts remain with Tracy and his family, as well as the families of the other victims.
