Lana Del Rey Doesn’t Think Feminism Is An Interesting Concept, Which Is Exactly How We Feel About Her

Another day, another ridiculous celebrity quote about feminism. Today’s contender is Lana Del Rey, who is so cool that she really can’t be bothered with feminism at all, so just quit talking about it, okay? You’re making her sleepy.

In a recent interview with Fader to promote her new album, Ultraviolence, Lana was asked about her ideas as far as gender equality and had to explain to the interviewer that she is much more interested in space. So if we could like, talk about that instead, that would be pretty rad.

“For me, the issue of feminism is just not an interesting concept. Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like, god. I’m just not really that interested.”

Okay wait but are you interested? Because I can’t tell. Seriously though, this is just so disappointing. Obviously, Lana is free to think whatever she wants about feminism, no matter how absurd I might find it…but that said, I’m so tired of celebrities like Shailene Woodley and Lana stating publicly that they aren’t interested in feminism, even though it’s a big part of why they’re able to do what they do today.

“I’m more interested in, you know, SpaceX and Tesla, what’s going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities.”

Okay yes, space is important. But before we conquer space, shouldn’t we make sure that everyone on this planet has the opportunity to be treated equally? It’s just a crazy idea I had.

“My idea of a true feminist is a woman who feels free enough to do whatever she wants.”

That’s a solid definition, but the only reason you’re able to feel free is because a bunch of generations of women and men did a ton of work to ensure that you are free to do whatever you want. And doesn’t everyone deserve that?

So even if you aren’t hopping on board with the movement, maybe think about working toward a time when the very mention of the word ‘feminist’ doesn’t inspire yawning and eye-rolling.
