My initial reaction when I heard that American Horror Story: Freak Show will feature both a scary clown and a bearded lady was a big sarcastic “Oh, how original of them!” paired with my world famous eye roll. However, as I leaned back into my chair, feeling smug, I leaned too far back and almost fell. Then after I balanced again, I realized I’m a big ol’ idiot because of course American Horror Story will put an original spin on it. DUH! They’ve been doing it for three seasons, why would they stop now?
Remember in season one when they managed to make the concept of a haunted house more terrifying than ever. Remember when she (SPOILER ALERT) was a ghost the whole time?! Remember in season two when they took the classic “spooky asylum” trope and made it pretty EFFED UP. I still can’t get that gory image of Chloe Sevigny out of my head. And then in the most recent season, Coven, they made a group of talented, bossy (oh wait, am I allowed to use that word?) witches who just kicked ass. It was excellent.
Show creator, Ryan Murphy chatted with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming season. So far all we know is that is will be about a 1950s Florida freak show run by a German (Jessica Lange, obviously).
“It was always a concept that Jessica and I talked about really early on. It was always her favorite one, which I thought was funny. I’ve had many different versions that I’ve run by her. I just love it. It feels really right.”
I love that this is Jessica Lange’s favorite concept. Somehow talking about this cast makes me all warm and fuzzy inside (then I remember how I won’t be able to watch these episodes alone). Most of our favorite cast members will be returning too. Including Evan Peters, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe and Sarah Paulson, among others.
“I thought it was going to be light but it’s turning out to be quite terrifyingly dark, which it feels much more like the Asylum season. But look — if you have a character named the Clown Killer, it’s going to be dark.”
I’m both excited and terrified for this new season. I’ve never been a person terrified of clowns but maybe it’s my time to join that group. I’m assuming “clown killer” means a killer who is a clown and not a man who kills clowns. Either way, I am on board. I just wonder if it will be based on a true story again.
What are you looking forward to most in the new season?
