Listening To Justin Bieber Talk About God Is A Super Convincing Argument For Atheism

Justin Bieber talking about the Bible on 'The Pledge' by Brandon Burke May 2014I’m sure there are plenty of great, compelling reasons to believe in god, but listening to Justin Bieber talk about the Bible for even twenty seconds makes every single one of them fly out of my head.

How do I know that? Because Justin appears in a little vignette at the end of his friend Brandon Burke’s video ‘The Pledge’, which he made in an effort to raise one million pledges for god in collaboration with his #iPledge campaign. (Because the heavenly host understands hashtags and He’d love it if you could sign their petition!!!!!) Justin only talks for about twenty seconds, during which time he is utterly incapable of wrapping his head around the fact that god forgave the earth for killing his son, Jesus.

Take a drink every time he says the word ‘son’, and I’ll see you on the other side. Justin’s part starts at around 3:55.

“For God loved the world so much he gave up his own son, right? Imagine, like, someone killing your son. Like a bunch of people killing your [son]. These are your people, right? It’s like, how are you killing my son? That’s my son. It’s gonna be hard for you to forgive. God forgave everyone and they killed his son. That shows how much grace God has.”

LIKE, HOW ARE YOU KILLING MY SON, BRO? I’m no biblical scholar or anything…but Justin clearly is. His comprehensive grasp of the literature is so impressive that I want to gather my humble flock at his feet and drink of his wisdom like so much blessed wine. I’m obsessed with this. And again, this has absolutely nothing to do with religion itself. Everybody’s welcome to their own beliefs, and I’ve been a part of some really interesting, intellectual conversations about faith and sacrifice — it’s just that the words coming out of this idiot‘s mouth aren’t contributing to one of them.

I’m just trying to give a heads up to Brandon and god and everybody that if you make Justin the person in charge of recruitment, I think it’s gonna be hard to rustle up enough converts to make up a kickball team.

It’s sickening that you can even write that @Alexis as a title to describe someone, anyone, talking about how they feel about God.

The concept of someone allowing to be crucified, whether believed in or not, is a subject worthy of inquiry and discussion considering how many people have been killed or died in the name of religion, which is still a major source of division in our world.

Bieber was brought up by a very religious woman, and is himself probably relying on religion to help him through this time. So, yes, he talked about God, Jesus, whatever, not as an academic but as someone trying to understand something humans couldn’t imagine doing.

For you to sit behind your computer punching out condescension like you have a f&$%king right to look down on him says so much about you.

Another traffic-baiting piece of rubbish that pours scorn on a kid who really doesn’t need it.

    Well done.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

This isn’t about religion, it’s about Justin Bieber sounding like an idiot.

    • Eva Jolopi

And yet it’s you who wins that prize instead.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

If I’d known we were giving away prizes, I would’ve tried harder.

    • Eva Jolopi

      That made me chuckle.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

      I’m glad to hear it!

    • Eva Jolopi

      xx

    • sickening

Alexis, to be blunt, you sound like an a-hole. To come after him for trying to explain faith, which is complex and different to each individual – when reestablishing his is likely exactly what he needs right now – is the lowest of blows. You sound like an ignorant twit, and quite frankly, I pity you the sadness that is your life. If Justin Bieber hurst your feelings that badly, you really need Jesus more than anyone.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

To be blunt, ‘sickening’ — I am an asshole.

    • Nbl

And an ignorant twit. Did I “hurst” your feelings?

    • M_G

” If Justin Bieber hurst your feelings that badly, you really need Jesus more than anyone.” I…..I don’t even know where to begin listing all the things that are wrong with this sentence.

    • CMJ

I come at hypocrites who try to use their “faith” as a distraction for all the stupid/horrible shit they do.

    • M_G

Perhaps if Justin Bieber had ever, at any point before now, given even the slightest impression that he had strong feelings about God/Jesus/etc., this wouldn’t sound as ridiculous as it does. Because, at BEST, this feels like a really bad PR stunt. OH! And MORE importantly, this is a celebrity gossip website, not BibleGateway.com. So, there’s that to consider.

    • you need a clue.

LOLOL are you kidding? He’s spoken extensively about his faith and religious upbringing in the past. His mother’s story of her faith, and how that impacted how she raised him, is well documented, and he’s been very open about the fact that he’s a Christian. I don’t know where you’ve been for the last five years.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

Certainly not at a Justin Bieber concert.

    • M_G

That’s an EXCELLENT point, Mr. A Clue. Except that points more to the fact that his mother is religious, not him. But hey, his behavior in public over the past few years has certainly demonstrated those strong Christian morals, right? When Justin, like Jesus, egged his neighbor’s house, drunkenly peed into a bucket, drag raced while under the influence, and so on and so forth.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

Blessed are we to have Him among us.

    • Mystik Spiral

Haha, exactly what I was going to say. Just what the world needs, more Christians who can talk the talk but can’t walk the walk. Ugh. Believing in god means nothing if you continue to act the douchebag.

    • Eva Jolopi

Honey, Jesus didn’t come for the saved. He came for the sinners.

You don’t have the right to judge JB, me, anyone. All you have to work with is what anyone have to work with – ourselves.

Take your judgement and the catalog of bile you demonstrate and go sit in a dark room and work on it.

    • M_G

Snookums, since Justin Bieber is a public figure, I absolutely have the right to judge him if he doesn’t act what he preaches. And speaking of an inability to Google, you clearly have a hard time with such simple searches as “Justin Bieber antics,” “Justin Bieber douchebag,” or really, just simply “Justin Bieber,” because I would guarantee you that for every hit where he talks about God or Jesus, there are two more where he acts like a fool. If he is a Christian, he is a hypocrite, which is clearly something you know a LOT about, since you condemn me for judging Bieber and, in the same breathe, judge my comment. Why don’t you go pray on that for a while. You may be some time.

    • CMJ

I don’t know if you should hold Mr. Bieber up as the arbiter of Christian morals.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

I tried to hold Justin Bieber up as the arbiter of Christian morals, but then he turned into an egg, so I threw him.

    • CMJ

And then you prayed at a shrine for war criminals.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

I wish they’d had a bathroom there, but a mop bucket did me just fine!

    • Eva Jolopi

Er, no, he went to a temple he was told was a shrine but wasn’t told it housed 14 very very bad dead people.

Easy mistake to make in a country you don’t speak the language in. I have, in fact, read a fair few comments from Asian visitors to Tokyo who said they also made the same mistake.

Do let me know when your perfection subscription runs out.

    • FemelleChevalier

You should’ve boiled him first, then give it to someone who’s hungry. That’s a Christian thing to do, ain’t it?

    • Alexis Rhiannon

I wouldn’t know, I take all my cues from Justin.

    • Eva Jolopi

Good god M_G, where have you been? JB talked about his faith a long time ago and since. His mom is virtually a missionary.

He doesn’t have to convince you of anything. He talked God in a video he’s helping a pal with. If that’s a crime in your book add it to the list of pretty nasty qualities you’re exhibiting that could do with changing.

      Your stupidity is priceless.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RllYuI4O2Jg

    • M_G

Oh, I am sorry….silly me. I must have missed the class in Sunday school where they preach about drag racing, vandalism, fat shaming….you know, all of Bieber’s favorite hobbies. It’s SUPER great that he says he’s Christian and has faith and blah blah blah, but unfortunately, his actions don’t support it….you know, kind of like how your posts on this thread really only support the fact that you’re an arrogant, self-righteous, attention seeking jerk.

    • Nbl

It’s a shame you missed that day. We had Sizzurp instead of wine for the communion. Everyone had siezures. We chalked it up to the holy spirt instead of the overdose of cough syrup

  • Jenni

    That’s crazy man

    • Alexis Rhiannon

      Lil Prophet.

  • M_G

So…..how many comments are we expected on THIS article where people leave comments like, “HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE BIBLE, HERE LET ME QUOTE IT FOR YOU TO SHOW YOU HOW EVIL YOU ARE!!!” while bypassing the fact that a) this is a celebrity gossip site and b) you’re making fun of Justin Bieber, not God/religion (even though you clearly spelled it out)? 100? 300??

    • Alexis Rhiannon

I can’t figure out if I’m more excited or terrified.

  • And none for Justin Bieber

To sound like a wise, well-read and profound motherfucker, religion is the opium of the people.

You’ve snuck into a tricky and confusing marsh here, Alexis!

    • Alexis Rhiannon

      Neck-deep!

  • Feluda

I definitely don’t think that what Justin Bieber here is trying to tell us is wise or making him look devout or anything. But, it’s his belief, and while this may sound like holding double standards to people, I do believe that some things are so very personal that even if some are stupid enough to put them out in the world, they shouldn’t be judged upon by others. But, that’s just me!

    • Alexis Rhiannon

It honestly isn’t about the religious aspect. I wouldn’t want him as a spokesperson for the things I believe in either, because I think he makes even worthy causes sound absurd and ignorant.

    • Feluda

      A thousand upvotes for that!

    • Alexis Rhiannon

      Thanks, Feluda!

  • FemelleChevalier

Great. When all else failed, use religion/faith as a shield. “Oh! Look at me! I’m not that bad of a guy! I KNOW JESUS, MAN!”

All talk and no walk, Bieber?

    • Eva Jolopi

      And you’re perfect,right?

Is it possible do’y'a think that Justin just like Burke’s video, what it’s saying and want to lend a hand. Your cynicism is a reflection of yourself, not him.

    • FemelleChevalier

No one is, but I guess I’m perfectly sane to the point that I’m not impressed with him and his antics.

Liking a video doesn’t reflect on him being “righteous” and him being a “good” Christian. Any person with a religious background is pretty much aware of what’s this and what’s that: it’s nothing special. His words about faith is nothing special, only hypocritical.

Unless his faith starts to reflect on his actions, then nothing has changed. He’s still a brat.

    • Eva Jolopi

      In your opinion.

    • M_G

Which she is entitled to, just as you are entitled to yours. Thank you for claring that up.

  • katyisgod

Can you make a compilation of the best and the worst comments once this is done?! They’re always hilarious!

    • Alexis Rhiannon

If I get enough of them, yes!

  • Makmck

Gosh I’m certainly no JB fan but pretty low of you to mock someone trying to articulate something as complex as their faith. I’m disappointed.

Take a minute from being flip and snarky and reconsider your position and the position of those readers you have offended.

    • CMJ

A “faithful” douche is still a douche. I just have a huge problem with hypocrites who hide behind their declarations of their faith to distract from all the shitty things they’ve done.

    • M_G

This article wasn’t bashing Justin Bieber for expressing faith in God. This article was bashing Justin Bieber for being Justin freaking Bieber. Speaking just for myself here, there is no way I believe, even for a second, that the Biebs places any real importance on his supposed faith, or he wouldn’t act the way he does.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

My point is that whether it’s important to him or not, he’s diminishing his position by failing to be articulate about it. Why isn’t that a fair point to make?

    • Makmck

Bc to non-Christians, faith is a difficult concept concept to convey. Yeah the kid is a brat but I completely understood what he was saying and where he was going with this. It’s actually referred to as the ‘mystery of faith’ in the catholic religion for this very reason. It’s a mystifying thing that’s hard to wrap your head around.

I know this us suppose to be a fun blog and all but laughing about this and encouraging others to do so just seems wrong. I no it sounds cliche – but is nothing sacred? Can’t a man express his faith without ridicule? Christians are not saints and we are all works in progress. The good news is if he continues to believe in Jesus he will eventually get there.

    • Nbl

I think people of the Muslim religion and Jewish religions (what up fellow Jews!) understand faith better than Christians. Considering the hardcore of those groups don’t pick and choose parts of their holy books to follow. How’s that mixed fabric shirt treating you? Also you’ve clearly never be around real scientists. They put faith into mathematical and scientific principles. Have you ever seen a scientist find out their life’s work has been disproved? It’s scary. And faith is NOT hard to explain. Liken it to gravity. You can’t see it, most people can’t explain it, and without it we would be lost in space. Despite all that, every morning you wake up and gravity affects your life in important ways. You put blind faith in its power. That’s faith. Did I, as a non-Christian, explain that well enough for you?

    • Makmck

Sigh… I have no idea what you are talking about.

So this is the internet commentary everyone is always talking about huh? Geez…depressing…

    • FemelleChevalier

What the comment is trying to explain is that faith doesn’t just encompass morality or religious practices. The essence of faith, even religious one, is the human’s inclination to believe in something that, in turn, helps them to be better human beings.

Parroting words isn’t enough. Reading the Bible isn’t enough. Praying isn’t enough. Unless your actions have shown it, (e.g. being a decent human being who abides by simple laws), then you being a Christian, Catholic, Islam, or Jewish doesn’t automatically make you a good person. Being a good person makes you a good person.

      - A Catholic

    • Nbl

      I heart you.

    • FemelleChevalier

      :)

    • Nbl

Let me explain it to you then. By saying that faith is a difficult concept for “non-Christians” to comprehend is just ludicrous. The vast majority of non Christians express their faith perfectly fine and often do so more than those of the Christian faith. In fact it’s kind of insulting to say that because someone doesn’t worship the same religion as yourself, they somehow develop a block in comprehending a basic human function. And yes, faith is a basic human function. Some people might not put faith in a certain religion or even religion at all, but they have faith in something. Whether it’s science, the government or even themselves. Now this is the problem when discussing religion, you don’t get to excuse stupidity because the topic is religion. The fact is, Bieber is not exactly bright. You said the kid is a brat, yourself. So why does the change in subject suddenly make him this deep complex character trying to express himself? There are so many ways to express your belief and this isn’t an off the collar remark. He could have easily re-done the whole thing in a more eloquent way, but he didn’t. Because he is not smart and seems to think that this is somehow a deep and spiritual remark.

  • Belieber for life

how fcking dare u, bitch?!!!!!! hes out there just trying to enlighten us and sharing such a important thing, n u just pick on him because u have a grduge against hin?!!!!!! thats pathetic and mean. he cares for us fans and is trying to send a good message to us, praying to god isnt bad!!!!!!! n hes not a idiot, fuck you you slut

    • CMJ

I also think Jesus/God would tell you that calling people “fucking sluts” is bad….

    • Belieber for life

      get lost

    • Alexis Rhiannon

…in the desert for forty days. And think about what you’re saying, Belieber.

    • M_G

How DO you come up with these brilliant responses? You know, in between worshiping Bieber and, I don’t know, worrying about prom or whatever else high schoolers do in their spare time…

    • Alexis Rhiannon

I think you need to make up your mind whether I’m a bitch or a slut. As we learn in the Bible, it’s very difficult to be both.

    • FemelleChevalier

      Teachings of Justin? Wow…

Hey Alexis! I guess the ‘Lil Prophet’ nickname is very fitting after all!

    • Alexis Rhiannon

      I’m obsessed.

    • FemelleChevalier
    • Alexis Rhiannon

Haaa is that Adam Lambert? Who is that?

    • FemelleChevalier

      Yep, it’s Adam.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

      Praise Him.

    • Nbl

Oh please tell me you have a Bieber shrine in the back of your closet, in the style of Helga Patacki. As a type this, I realize you might be way too young to understand a Hey Arnold! reference. That makes me feel sad for you.

    • M_G

      I wish I could up-vote this 1,000 times.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

      Speaking of sending great messages!!!!!

    • CMJ

I mean….if the Biebs is all about the “messages” he should really send one about grammar.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

It’s time for another Sermon on the Mount.

    • Feluda

DOES ANYONE MIND IF I SCREENSHOT THIS AND POST IT TO TUMBLR?!!!

    • Alexis Rhiannon

Not really…but which part and why?

    • M_G

HAHAHAHA! Oh my! Such rage and immaturity. Such horrible grammar and spelling. That’s how you KNOW it’s an authentic post from a fan of Justin “Queen of the Douchebags” Bieber.

  • J_Doe5686

Justin Bieber, dear. If you were really into religion and stuff you’d have known that THAT WAS THE purpose of JC, man. Just pick a bible. It’s there. He knew he was going to kamikaze the whole time, like, what kind of message are you sending to your fans? The wrong one obviously!

“I hope he’d have been a belieber.” -JB on JC.
