Guess what, everybody? It’s finally May today! And unless you were off the Internet entirely yesterday (and a few days before that too), chances are high that you saw “It’s gonna be May” jokes all over the place. You know, the jokes that play on the *NSYNC song “It’s Gonna Be Me”? But I bet you never expected to see that joke coming from President Barack Obama. “Never!” you say. “The President of the United States isn’t aware of silly millennial puns related to Justin Timberlake.”
Well, the president himself might not be aware (although I bet Sasha and Malia have told him about it), but whoever runs his official Facebook page certainly is. Last night the account uploaded the following photo with the caption “It’s gonna be May.”
It’s pretty rare that any of us get to make an “It’s gonna be May” joke using a photo of ourselves hanging out and smiling with Justin Timberlake himself, while Queen Latifah stands in the background looking fabulous. I mean, if you happen to have a photo on hand of yourself doing that exact thing, then good for you. You can probably sense my crippling jealousy through the computer, but good for you.
Even though I spent most of yesterday cursing the Internet for putting that song — which I’m ashamed to say I don’t know all the non-May words to — in my head, I thoroughly appreciate this post. It doesn’t even matter to me that it almost definitely was not President Obama’s idea. While he’s busy doing important presidential things, he can leave his social media people to make the awesome jokes. Remember last year when the White House Twitter account posted a Mean Girls joke related to Bo the dog? Never underestimate the power of a great pop culture reference.
