The First Teaser Of Gone Girl Proves That Ben Affleck Was Tragically Miscast

Ben Affleck in Gone Girl imageLet’s all think back to the last movie role we saw Ben Affleck in that he was actually suited for. It definitely wasn’t Argobecause of the whole not-at-all-Mexican thing, and based on how angry everyone is about his casting in Batmanit seems pretty likely it’s not that one either.

You can continue digging around on his IMDb page for the answer, but while you’re doing that, I have some bad news — according to the teaser clip I just saw from Gone Girlit doesn’t look like we should be holding out much hope for that movie, either.

Gone Girl has the unique disadvantage of being based on a book by Gillian Flynn that came out in early 2012, giving everyone who read it over two years to really formulate an idea of one of the book’s protagonists, Nick Dunne. He’s described as very handsome in a slick, oily kind of way, that makes people think he’s a douchebag. And as soon as you say that, I think of someone like Ian Somerhalder or Chris Pine, but suuuuure. We can try out Ben Affleck too. I can’t really see it, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

At least until I see the first teaser clip…which is right now, and I’m already done giving him said benefits of said doubts.

Ben’s not sharp hot, he’s kind of mopey hot. Like I’m not convinced he’s capable of making it look like gears are turning behind his eyes, which is a really crucial trait for this character. I have a fear now that it’ll just be two hours of Ben bumbling around and everyone else having to act really hard around him.

Which is a shame, because I think I speak for everyone when I say I devoured that book. It’d be a bummer if the movie was a total let-down.

…Calm the eff down… It’s one teaser for a teaser… We see 4 shots of Ben and 1 line of dialogue… You’re saying that’s enough to say he’s terrible in the film? You clearly went into this wanting to hate him so you’d take any glimpse of it as proof to your pre-existing beliefs.

This 19 second clip with narration DUBBED OVER the narration shows nothing. Get over yourself.

        Speaking of getting over ourselves…

      • Luscious Parker

Yeah don’t think that was actually David Fincher. Kinda missed his point.

I was so excited for this movie now I have zero enthusiasm for it. From casting Ben Affleck, to changing the ending ( Fincher already ruined the ending to Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), to these mediocre clips I just have no hope. Sorry Rosamund Pike you deserve so much better.

      • Kaitlin Reilly

They’re changing the ending?!? I didn’t love the ending of the book but I certainly don’t want the film to change it.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Yeah they want to make sure people who read the book still have a reason to see the movie.

      • Kaitlin Reilly

Okay, I’ll totally give them that — kind of brilliant of them. I would have seen it either way but I’ll probably enjoy it more knowing that i actually don’t know what’s going to happen.

      • elle

Yeah and to be fair Gillian Flynn is involved in the scriptwriting but Gone Girl is the only book hers I’ve actually liked (can’t even believe they are turning the dreck that is Dark Places into a movie) and as stated Fincher has already ruined one of my favorite book endings so I’m basically bummed.

      • Kaitlin Reilly

I liked Dark Places and Sharp Objects but this is the only one of her novels I could see working well on screen. Fingers crossed the new ending is awesome! At least I’ll be surprised if it’s not true to the book.

      • elle

Ugh I hated dark places but tbf I didn’t finish it I just found Libby so unlikable that I was like I’m done. I believe they have also optioned Sharp Objects but haven’t heard any updates.

      • elle

And that’s true about the twist. I’ll def Netflix it even if I don’t see it in the theater. My sis who also loved the book tells me I’m being too negative about the movie and she’s probably right. I just found it to be such an original book/concept and loved it and wonder if the changes ending can do the original justice.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Totally agreed.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

Yeah I’m bummed. I think Rosamund could have been (could still be???) really good.

      • elle

Yeah I’ve liked her ever since Fracture and hope this movie makes her huge and any failings will be on other people.

      • MerlePerle

I was just about to look up the name of that actress because I was sure it couldn’t have been Rosamund, she sure hasn’t aged a day!

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        She is magic.

    • emilykwells2188

While that clip is not much of a teaser, I kind of agree with you. Ben is attractive but not the right kind of attractive. I always pictured Nick as more “frat boy” hot.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Totally! Intimidating hot.

I completely disagree – the book describes Nick as hot in the way you want to punch him. I think a LOT of people would describe Ben that way, in fact, i feel like that’s why most people dislike him. He has that EXACT frat boy douchebag hotness factor

    • Jenny

I always thought Ben Affleck was perfect for this role – in fact, the entire casting is brilliant in my head. when I was reading the book, I somehow pictured him then. Also, I agree with Melly G.
Are you sure you guys didn’t see the face at 0:01? That’s…very, very Nick Dunne.
Anyway, this is barely 10 seconds of his face, it’ll probably, hopefully be a really good film with good acting.
Excited for the new ending – I really hope it isn’t pointless – like, I hope they haven’t changed the ending just for the sake of it. Initially, that annoyed me a little. But now I’m looking forward to it. Let’s hope it’s awesome.
