Andrew Garfield Got Weirdly Mad At A Reporter For Calling Emma Stone His Girlfriend

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone attending Amazing Spider Man London premiere April 2014You know that thing where you meet your girlfriend doing a huge franchise movie, so you do the whole promo circuit together? And it’s adorable and everyone loves it, and then you do one interview separately, and someone refers to your girlfriend as your girlfriend, and all of a sudden you’re WHAT WHO WHY I NEVER.

Well that happened to Andrew Garfield, who for whatever reason totally clammed up when a reporter referred to Emma Stone as his girlfriend. I don’t know if he had something going on that day or what, but in my mind, it was a really weird overreaction to a very innocuous comment.

Like I said, the stars split up for this The Amazing Spider Man 2 interview, but even though they were separate, they both got the same question from the same outlet, which was ITN News. They asked what animal’s abilities each actor would like to inherit after being bitten, just like Peter Parker with that whole spider thing, and Emma answered:

“I would probably want to be a bird.”

Annnnnnd as coincidence would have it, Andrew had the same thought:

“A bird! An eagle! I’d like to get bitten by an eagle and then I’ll have a nice fly around the world and I’ll shit on bad people.”

The reporter thought that was interesting enough that she decided to tell Andrew later on that both he and Emma had chosen the same animal, saying:

“Your girlfriend gave the same answer.”

And then things got weird.

Andrew: “Who’s my girlfriend? You’re making an assumption about my personal life, and my personal life is not public property.”

Reporter: “Isn’t it?”

Andrew: “Nope.”

Reporter: “You’re in a massive film with her.”

At which point apparently Andrew became slightly more contrite with this response:

“We’re acting together, yes.”

Okay. Let me say first of all that there are some very logical reasons not to want Emma to be referred to as ‘your girlfriend’. And not even romantic ones, but career ones! She’s an independent performer, and it would make sense for him to want her to be referred to by name instead of just fading into being his significant other.

BUT. These two have been together for almost three years and are incredibly high-profile, so you can’t be mad at people for knowing you’re together. It may not be fair, but you did choose a career in which the lines blur significantly between your personal and private lives. Especially because you’re acting opposite each other in the movie!

Be grumpy if you want to, but taking it out on the reporter without explaining why is kind of uncool.

this guy always gave me a slightly dodgy (aka douchey) feel about him. that Oscar incident with Batkid (and his publicly taking him to Disneyland after news broke to mitigate the bad press) reaffirmed my suspicion. this overreaction doubly reaffirms it.

I’m not convinced we got the whole story on that Oscar incident though. I think that story might have been misreported, but it’s hard to know.

      • Jon

That’s true. We’ll never really know what happened with that whole Batkid fiasco but the damage was done. There’s no denying this recent run-in though. Total jerk response IMO. Can’t picture Robert Pattinson reacting this way, for example

But he also slams his own franchise constantly, so I guess you win some, you lose some.

They cut the batkid segment from the Oscars because the people in suits didn’t want the segment anymore. Andrew said he wasn’t going up on stage unless batkid was going up with him and so they cut him too and last minute invited Chris Evans. I know this because my dad is one of the producers of the Oscars. My dad was pissed with Andrew yeah, but I thought it was a really noble thing to do. I’d met batkid before and poor guy, he seemed to excited. So, yes, the story is vastly misinterpreted to be publicity fodder. I’ve met Andrew and I can assure you that he is the sweetest guy. I was going through some rough things and he actually sat down and listened to me all the way through and told me to stay strong and gave me a bullying hotline. He also talked about his own experiences with bullying to make me feel less alone. This was when he was the busiest person on the planet. And about the interview above, I’m sure everyone has off days. I just get really mad when anyone talks shit about him because I know how amazing he is and how much he helped me get better. The world would be a better place with more guys like him.

He didn’t take him to Disneyland after the news broke, the Disney trip on Monday had already happened before the news broke mid week. He’s just a fiercely private guy, he had press interviews all day and I saw four in which the interviewers kept trying to ask personal questions about him and Emma, he politely dodged them all. This premiere was at the end of the day and I think he just got a bit fed up. Can’t say I blame him, esp. after the Ellen interview last week where I thought she went over the line.

      • Jon

Hmm….yeah, not buying it. Oh, so it was the end of the day and he was “fed up”? I guess that justifies his needlessly curt response. And please do not bring up the “fiercely private” guy excuse. Most celebrities (Kardashian/Jenner family notwithstanding) want privacy but at the same time, c’mon, the dude’s not a recluse.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

I can totally see that. I just felt bad for the reporter, especially given that he didn’t offer an explanation.

    • Rachel

Eeeek, that was such a weird reaction. Understandable that he doesn’t want to talk about it, he’s a very private person. But he could have handled it A LOT differently.

      • Alexis Rhiannon

        Totally.

It’s seems like they had a fight or something because he’s usually totally adorable when he’s with Emma. An he did not react like this in Ellen.

This guy is a douche who is letting fame go to his head. Can’t stand celebrities that outwardly parade their relationships for PR then cry foul and whine about their privacy.

This guy isn’t even a talented actor. I’m so tired of these marketed mass produced entertainers. The Hollywood oligarchy picks and chooses who will be their face and it has nothing to do with talent.
