In case you had any doubts that James Franco was pulling a PR stunt with this whole “flirtin’ with a teen on Instagram” thing, I think his confession this morning on Live with Kelly and Michael oughta do the trick. Yep, you read that right, he already confessed to the whole sordid affair. Which either means Olivia Pope’s on the case or he’s making an effort to keep his name trending today. And nothing helps you trend quite like coming out and saying that you did indeed chat with a 17-year-old on Instagram.
“I’m embarrassed. I guess I’m just a model about how social media’s tricky. It’s a way people meet each other today, but what I’ve learned is you don’t know who’s on the other end. I used bad judgment and I learned my lesson.”
First of all, he’s a model of how social media’s tricky? James Franco is many things, including an actor, professor and freelance shapeshifter, but he is not an idiot. He knows how social media works. And he did sorta kinda know who was on the other end because the alleged conversation shows him asking questions like “when is your bday?” and “do you have a bf?” But sure, let’s pretend that James Franco just discovered the Internet yesterday and is just now figuring how it works. Only so that we can move onto the sad sap story he goes on to tell next about how hard it is to hit on people in an easily-screenshotted forum when you’re famous.
“Unfortunately in my position, not only do I have to go through the embarrassing rituals of meeting someone, but if I do that, then it gets published for the world so it’s doubly embarrassing.”
Aww, poor little bugger’s so powerful that when he chats up 17-year-old girls online he gets publicly shamed for it. It’s like To Catch a Predator, except in this case we’re Chris Hansen and Instagram is just a youthful actress offering him a glass of lemonade. Luckily for Franco, Hollywood Life’s here to explain that he’s not actually a predator because consent laws override large age gaps.
Obviously when the conversations went public, the internet exploded and James took a ton of grief for hitting on such a young fan, even though the age of consent in New York is 17.
Also while we’re talking about luck, it’s lucky for him that this whole scandal blew up the same week that the trailer for his new indie film dropped. And it’s tripley lucky for him that Palo Alto’s about James Franco hitting on a teenage girl! What’s a
brilliant PR stunt weird coincidence!
