Don’t Bother Defending Stephen Colbert From #CancelColbert — He Has It Covered

Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report March 2014I honestly don’t know why we all even bothered trying to have Stephen Colbert‘s back after that tweet controversy last week. I’m sure everyone was well-intentioned, but as always, he completely and totally has it covered.

I’m referring of course to the offensive-out-of-context tweet that started a media firestorm last week. It’s since been taken down, but here’s the original text:

“I am willing to show #Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever.”

That’s a joke taken directly from a satirical segment lampooning Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder for starting a foundation benefiting ‘original Americans’ instead of addressing the inherent racism in his team’s name. But yes, out of context, it’s startlingly racist. Which was kind of the design, but whatever. I’m getting sidetracked from my real mission, which was to show you Stephen defending himself.

Since this all went down late Thursday, after the show had already filmed, last night, a Monday, was Stephen’s first chance to respond on-air, and he did it beautifully. He reminded us again that he himself isn’t in charge of the now-deceased @ColbertReport Twitter handle (his is @StephenAtHome), that he plays a character on the show, that everyone who’s bullying Twitter activist Suey Park needs to lay off it, and that he’s one of the smartest, funniest, most mindful people on television right now.

“I don’t even see race. People tell me I’m white and I believe them, because I just devoted six minutes to explaining why I’m not a racist. And that is about the whitest thing you can do.”

Oh man. If you know me at all, you know self-awareness with a side of incisive social commentary? Where do I effing sign?
