I’m gonna be honest and say that I pretty much only know Iggy Azalea as that girl who maybe flashed her vagina and/or butt on the red carpet of the European Music Awards last year. So the release of her new music video “Fancy,” featuring Charli XCX didn’t really mean much to me. But then I heard that it was basically a 3-minute-24-second reenactment of Clueless and I was like, “Where is this video I must watch this video give it to me now!” Trust me, if you’re a Cher Horowitz fan, you’ll like this video. Even if you’re not an Iggy fan. Even if you’ve never heard of Iggy. Even if you’re a virgin who can’t drive. I know, that was way harsh.
It starts with a title sequence that looks just like the one for Clueless, and then we see Iggy picking out her outfit all Cher-style on that outfit-creator program that must have looked super high-tech in 1995. Cut to Iggy in a perfect replica of Cher’s debate class ensemble as an Amber lookalike looks on in disgust. AKA my own personal Heaven. There’s also a tennis scene, a freeway horror show (don’t worry, Murray’s doppelganger has braces), and a super ’90s house party.
You might be thinking, “So what? They made a video look like a movie. How original.” You can’t see it (hopefully), but I’m making a W with my fingers right now. I love when people pay homage to things. The closer the homage is to making me think I’m watching the thing it’s paying homage to, the better. When Jimmy Fallon recreated Michelle Tanner’s bedroom for that Full House reunion, I was ecstatic. When those kids recreated the Recess opening, my eight-year-old self felt a disturbance in the force. So if you love this stuff as much as I do, go ahead and enjoy. But be warned there’s some NSFW language.
