While I don’t want to take all the credit for Lupita Nyong’o winning tonight at the 2014 Oscars, I do want it on the record that I’ve rooted harder for her than I’ve ever rooted for anyone else. And my rooting goes all the way back to the days when I used to watch the Kids’ Choice Awards. Like everyone else with two ears, two eyes and a soul, I loved her heartbreaking performance as Patsy in 12 Years a Slave and I can’t think of anyone who’s more deserving to go home with this award tonight.
So it goes without saying that her winning made my heart swell with pride. As if I’d personally helped her get there. Throw in her tearful acceptance speech and I’ll go ahead and say that my heart grew three whole sizes tonight. Which is weird, because mostly it shrinks and shrivels away midway through an awards show. Turns out tweeting snarky things for three hours in a row doesn’t do wonders for one’s health. But enough about me and more about Lupita. If this speech doesn’t make your eyes wet, well then, you need to get your eyes checked, because it’s beautiful.
