By now you’ve likely heard the news: Robin Thicke and Paula Patton are separating. It’s not exactly something I’d call shocking, considering A.) they’re a celebrity couple, B.) they’re constantly bragging about their sex life as if to prove something, and C.) Robin Thicke is a skeevy, skeevy man. There are plenty of rumors swirling about just what caused the problems, and people will do plenty of speculating. But one thing we shouldn’t do is start blaming Miley Cyrus.
That might seem like a giant leap to make, but let me explain. A new TMZ report claims that Miley and Robin’s VMAs performance (Remember that time in our lives?) was what caused his marriage to Paula to fall apart. Paula apparently felt “utterly disrespected,” and even though Miley supposedly improvised the more sexual portions of the performance, the fact that Robin went along with it angered her. That photo of Robin allegedly grabbing a woman’s ass at an after-party made things worse, and their marriage simply deteriorated after that. Cue villagers with pitchforks outside of Miley’s house! Not so fast.
Miley and Robin’s VMAs performance was not the first time Robin found himself in compromising positions with half-naked ladies. There’s this little video he made for a song called “Blurred Lines” that features models dancing against him in only flesh-colored panties while he sings creepy lyrics that could be construed as a promotion of date rape. But Miley Cyrus twerking on him at an award show is what marked the beginning of the end?
Miley’s raunchy onstage behavior was also not some sort of sneak attack designed to destroy his relationship. Robin said last fall that they planned to make it controversial:
“They told me [beforehand] that Miley’s going to take her clothes off and dance around and she might bend over… I just said, ‘I don’t care, let’s entertain the people.’”
He also said in another interview that they planned things like rubbing the foam finger on his crotch. Paula even said herself that the performance didn’t bother her, commenting, “I don’t know what the big deal is.” And as much as the VMAs performance might have creeped me out, the bottom line is Miley and Robin were doing their jobs. Their jobs just happen to be a little more risque than yours or mine. Paula Patton does love scenes in movies with people who aren’t her husband for millions of people to see. Did that cause their marriage to crumble as well?
So let’s not backtrack to six months ago and try to pinpoint a single event involving a particular controversial pop star as the impetus for a marriage falling apart. There’s a lot more at play here.
