Open Thread: I’m Looking For New Music, But I’m So Horrible At It That I Don’t Where To Start

Hello lovelies! What’s up? What’s new? CAN YOU BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED AT THE END OF THE FIRST EPISODE OF HOUSE OF CARDS? How about this weather? Last week you were all so helpful with your suggestions for shows I should give a second chance, I thought I would throw another question out to you. And it’s about music, something I’m admittedly very bad at. Sure I like music and sure I know all the words to every One Direction song thanks to the fact they’re my number one Pandora station, but I honestly don’t know any good music. If it’s not in the top 40 and if it’s not accompanied by a naked woman swinging around on wrecking ball, odds are very high that I don’t know it.

This is sad, I know. Especially when the subject comes up and people are like, “Jenni, you write about pop culture for a living, what’s a cool new group we should be jazzed about?” And I’m like ummmm, “Lorde is poppin’ and um 98 Degrees? They’re still hip? Hop? The Frozen soundtrack?” It’s embarrassing, to say the least. Grounds for being fired, to say the most.

And let the record show that I blame my mother entirely. The woman had me listening to Raffi cassette tapes well into the formative music appreciation years. I don’t think I knew the radio was an option in the car until I was in middle school. Seriously, if you’d ran into me at any point in the ’90s, I’d be humming about eating apples and bananas (ay-ples and ba-nay-nays).

So I’m asking you, my wonderful readers, to tell me who I should be listening to right now. I’m open to any and all suggestions. And do me a solid by throwing any relevant Youtube links into the comments so we can get ourselves a nice little Disqus playlist going.

“Latch” by Disclosure is easily my favorite song right now. It has a really sexy beat, and could also be a great work out song!

  • Alexis Rhiannon

Do you know Marina and the Diamonds? Love anything by her. And also Pharrell’s song ‘Happy’ from Despicable Me 2. And the whole album ‘Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor’ by Caro Emerald, and the song ‘Perfect Love’ by Lavender Diamond!

    • Olivia Wilson

Whoa, I’d never heard that song Perfect Love before but I think I need to go read a book on a beach while listening to that on repeat right now.

    • Alexis Rhiannon

      I’m obsessed with it.

  • Guest

Oh Raffi! I had that cassette as well. :) I am personally a fan of more indie alternative music and just love love LOVE Brandi Carlile. Her lyrics are not dime a dozen- very interesting and poetic. She has a bluesy feel to her songs although her new(er) album Bear Creek feels different and more current in many of her songs. You probably know one of her older songs, The Story. I’d try listening to “Raise Hell”, “Dreams”, and “Josephine” to get a feel for her.

    • Jenni

It’s so cute you think it was just one cassette. (SO VERY MANY!)

    • Guest

Ahh man! Mom skimped on the Raffi cassettes?? Boo. I saw someone recommended Ingrid M, she’s awesome! If you like her, you might also like Fleet Foxes, Regina Spektor, Kate Nash, and the Civil Wars. Love em all!

    • Ria

My youngest son’s band (The Aquadolls) toured with Kate Nash last year!!! He quit last month though, I was so sad.

    • Guest

      That is awesome!!

  • Rachel

Bastille is my favorite band right now, obsessed with them (Pompeii, Poet, The Draw, Laura Palmer, Haunt and Skulls are my fave songs), Another Story – The Head And The Heart is amazing and just so so good, Marina and the Diamonds, Girls Chase Boys- Ingrid Michaelson, Pumpin Blood- NONONO is super fun and catchy, and if I think of any others I will come back!

    • Jenni

I actually do know Ingrid and I do love her! So now I can take all your recs very seriously.

  • Lindsey Conklin

delta spirit and young the giant!

  • elle

American Authors, Cage the Elephant, I agree with Bastille, Muse isn’t new but they are one of my fave. Panic Station is on repeat on my iPod. Fitz and the Tantrums music is catchy as hell. And my number one favorite band (but they aren’t really new) is Matt and Kim. I actually love their song with soulja boy too called I’m a Goner.

    • Jenni

I did not see Soulja Boy making his way into this thread!

    • elle

I feel like I always bring these threads around to random/awkward spots. It’s a good catchy song though! I always listen to it while working out.

    • Jenni

No such thing as random on an open thread!

I love Passenger. His album, “All The Little Lights” is so great!

  • Emily

I suggest going to 8Tracks. This is a cool website, which users create playlists. These playlists include “Best of the 80s” or “Andrew Lloyd Webber songs” but also about activities: like “Homework Music” or “Chill Music.” Almost all the music I listen to now comes from 8 Tracks. Have fun!!

  • isabella

He’s become a bit mainstream now but i’ve been listening to him for a while now: Ed Sheeran. Hands down the best of our generation

    • Jenni

Saw him in concert and he was awesome. Just wish he wasn’t do buddy-buddy with Taylor Swift.

  • lizinthelibrary

I really love Marian Call. She’s indie and mostly popular in geek circles (music based on Firefly will do that) and she’s got a great folky feel. Good Morning Moon is one of my favorite “feel happy” songs.

    • http://snapcracklepopcultbr.wordpress.com/ Brittany Rivera

      This is so awesome!

  • Zan

Classixx, Rhye, Phantogram, AlunaGeorge, Quadron. They’ve been in my rotation the last year. Good stuff. Also, the Classixx video has a Goldie Hawn Overboard vibe to it.

  • Katie

I’ve been LIVING and breathing Walk the Moon for the last 6 months. They feel like summertime and youth. Also Smallpools. Agnes Obel and Laura Marling if you want to read a book by a river or dance around a bonfire in Scotland. Foy Vance and Rachael Yamagata when you want to FEEL all the relationships.

    • Olivia Wilson

      Smallpools, yesss please.

  • Sierra Scholtens

Check out Royal Wood, he’s got a really cool sound and as well I would suggest Meaghan Smith! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-kdz7-zPDA I honestly could go on forever!

  • Ria

This might sound odd but I’ve found a lot of good, unheard of music by watching Catfish. I sit looking up the songs on Youtube while I watch it.

  • Alyssa

    St. Vincent, she’s amazing. http://youtu.be/AZW9NYX6JZA

  • Amy

I’m going to throw in my favorite album to listen to right now (it’s been out since 2012, but it’s still receiving a lot of airplay), An Awesome Wave by Alt J. It’s my go to lately because it’s one of those albums I can listen to from beginning to end. I’d also throw in Bastille, CHVRCHES, St. Vincent, and Broken Bells, and I’ll second the suggestion on Beck’s new album. And as always, keep calm and listen to Florence + The Machine. Florence Welsh can do no wrong. She is a goddess.

  • Basma

This is excellent music for work or workouts… i don’t do the latter.

    • Jenni

I make workout playlists in hopes they’ll inspire me…they never do.

  • http://snapcracklepopcultbr.wordpress.com Brittany Rivera

My 2 current obsessions are anything by Meg Meyers (but mostly ‘Adelaide’) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFP04p1-tRg

and ‘Before I Ever Met You” by Banks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzSQ67fhk6g

    • Jenni

      Done and done.

  • KC

Saw Haim on SNL a little while ago. Seems like people dig them or think they’re overhyped lol. The music is hard to categorize but I think that’s why I like them. Some songs have an R&B sound, others So-Cal vibe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TffpkE2GU4

Miguel’s song “Simplethings” was on Girls last night and I loved it. Angel Haze’s music is really good too (Listen to: “Battle Cry” featuring Sia). Bleachers is Jack Antonoff’s (of Fun.) side project (Listen to: “I Wanna Get Better”). The Neighbourhood is fun too (Listen to: “Sweater Weather”).

    • Jenni

I love Miguel, so that’s next on my list.
