Well this is scary. On Tuesday night 23-year-old Modern Family star Sarah Hyland was assaulted while taking a photo with a fan outside an after-party in Sydney, Australia, where her show is currently filming. A man apparently asked for her photograph and then grabbed her breast. Sarah reportedly pushed him away and shouted, “Don’t touch me there!” Security then stepped in and got the police involved. Sarah is reported to have left in tears. The 29-year-old man was arrested by NSW Police, and an investigation is underway.
The Daily Mail has photos of Sarah angrily pointing a finger at someone who is believed to be the man in question. Meanwhile, Sarah herself has spoken out about the incident, posting a Twitter explanation for her abrupt exit from the event:
Sorry to all the fans outside the #qantas event that I didn’t get to say hi to but I had to leave due to an inappropriate touch of a fan

It’s just further proof that the world is a scary place, and some people just plain suck. This could obviously have happened to anyone, and goodness knows it’s happened to too many people, famous and not famous. But when you’re a young woman in the spotlight, you have so many close encounters with random people every day whose intentions might not always be the best, and that’s incredibly scary. The number of strangers I hug and pose for photos with on a daily basis adds up to exactly zero. For someone like Sarah Hyland, that number’s obviously a lot higher.
I’m glad to know that the man was arrested and that it didn’t turn into anything more serious. Thankfully there was security there to assist her. It just serves as a reminder to people that there’s this little thing called personal space and respect for other humans, and groping someone’s breast without their permission kind of goes against both of those concepts.
