Perhaps you’re one of the people who knows all about the upcoming Marvel film Guardians Of The Galaxy. Perhaps you’ve been on the edge of your seat for a long time about this movie, but I can honestly say that even if you haven’t, you’re gonna wanna watch the trailer. Like now. Like yesterday in fact, and for one reason and one reason only – Chris Pratt.
He plays a character named Star-Lord, one of the movie’s five heroes alongside Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer. They were all sort of isolated, sidelined characters back in the nineties, so some Marvel illustrators correctly assumed that they could have a little more creative leeway with their story lines if they put them all together. Since they weren’t beloved characters of the Marvel universe like Spider Man or Wolverine or anybody like that, they could get away with doing some pretty weird stuff. Enter this movie.
These guys are the definition of a motley crew. The supremely-ripped Drax is rampaging across the galaxy to avenge the death of his wife and children, Gamora is a beautiful, deadly assassin played by Zoe Saldana, and Groot is some giant tree-man who travels alongside Rocket Racoon…who is a literal raccoon who steals things, voiced by Bradley Cooper. Naturally. It’s a group of randos and underdogs who aren’t bound by the restrictions and expectations by more known Marvel quantities, and nobody fits into that category better than Chris.
Chris Pratt has made himself famous as the doughy, adorably dumb Andy Dwyer on Parks And Rec, and when the trailer starts, he seems destined to follow that path into this new movie, as the only person who even knows his character’s superhero name is him. His real name is Peter Quill, and he’s just such an idiot right off the bat that you might be tempted to write him off as one of ‘a bunch of a-holes’, as the group is very fittingly described by probable villains Lee Pace and John C. Reilly. But then he takes off his shirt and OHMYGODYOUGUYS.
Talk about a lack of expectations. We’ve seen Chris get into crazy shape before, like in the above photo for Zero Dark Thirty in 2012, but that was an Oscar-nominated film. I figured it was just a fluke that he’d take a workout regimen so seriously, and my expectations were very low. There’s that phrase again, and it’s a really smart move on both Marvel and Chris’ part, because my mind just got totally blown from his body. He’s even more ripped than he was before. To the point that I’m gonna have to watch the trailer about four more times just to collect my wits.
Guardians Of The Galaxy will be released August 1st, 2014. And I’ll just leave this photo from his GotG training regimen right here, in case anyone needs something to ogle over until then.
