Drake Criticizes Macklemore For His Grammys Text, So Who Wants To Start The Slow Clap?

Drake MTV VMAs August 2013

Remember last month when Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won the Best Rap Album Grammy, beating rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Drake? And remember when he texted Kendrick Lamar telling him he deserved the award but not offering to give it to him? Of course, the only reason you would remember that text, unless you were looking over Macklemore’s shoulder when he sent it, is that he then shared it with the world on Instagram. Macklemore did. The person who sent the text, not the person who received it. Here’s a refresher.

It was kind of like giving money to a homeless person and then bragging about it online. Except in this case the only thing exchanged was a faux-humble text message, not money, or you know, a Grammy. We weren’t so impressed by it, and apparently neither was fellow nominee Drake, who recently gave an interview to Rolling Stone in which he totally calls Macklemore out for the phony, attention-hoggy move, saying “that shit was wack as fuck.”

“I was like, ‘You won. Why are you posting your text message? Just chill. Take your W, and if you feel you didn’t deserve it, go get better — make better music,’” he tells Rolling Stone contributing editor Jonah Weiner. “It felt cheap. It didn’t feel genuine. Why do that? Why feel guilt? You think those guys would pay homage to you if they won?”

Do you want to start the slow clap or should I? I’m just so glad that someone who’s actually in the industry is willing to call him out on this, especially since people like to put this halo over Macklemore’s head because he sings about gay rights and married dozens of people in a PR stunt. Of course, since Drake was also nominated in that category, he wishes he had gotten some acknowledgment too:

“To name just Kendrick? That shit made me feel funny. No, in that case, you robbed everybody. We all need text messages!”

This might just read as sour grapes because he didn’t win and also wasn’t the one Macklemore chose to publicly praise, but I can’t really blame him. It’s sort of customary when you win an award to acknowledge everyone who was nominated if any, not to say they deserved it more but to just be inclusive. I like that Drake said this, mostly because that text just really rubbed me the wrong way and I enjoy when people agree with me. So sue me.

So happy Drake said this! Posting that text reeked of a PR stunt and I couldn’t believe he was getting praise for it.

It would’ve been ok if Kendrick had posted it but guess the dude isn’t bothered about any of this.. Good on Drake for calling him out!

I still don’t love that he said Kendrick deserved it but kept the award to himself anyway, but yeah, at least if Kendrick had posted it, it would have looked a little more humble.

The text should have been #humblebrag. Drake gives a good response. *claps*

How nice that a Canadian artist so publicly bashes an American artist. Maybe he should go back to Toronto and he can take Justin Bieber with him while he’s at it. Drake should shut his fat mouth and feel lucky that he’s had the success he’s had (courtesy of America) because he doesn’t have an ounce of the talent Macklemore has.

Calling the marriage thing a “PR stunt” sort of gives the impression that the writer of this article is a tad biased against Macklemore and his gay rights stance. That aside, as someone who was very annoyed that night at all of the angry tweets to Mack about him not deserving his wins, I sort of agree with this article but also understand Mack’s unfortunate position. Mack’s like the Obama of the rap world in that he’s a nice guy, but to a fault. He should have told the haters to f off but I guess he couldn’t do that without losing fans so instead he sort of groveled for forgiveness for simply winning, and honestly, I was slightly disgusted. It’s one thing to tell Ken you felt he should have won, but to tell US that you sent Ken a message telling him he should have won was just embarrassing and obviously Mack’s passive way of telling turning fans to get off his back.

I was annoyed because I argued, and still argue, that on musicality alone, Mack and Ry’s Heist songs are better than KL’s Section 80 and Good Kid ones. Mack and Ry had the better more complex arrangements. The melody in Can’t Hold Us is truly epic and orchestral. And those two (Mack and Ry) did it all independently which makes it all the more impressive. Kendrick and Mack were both equally candid about their lives and views in their songs, and their flows are equally matched, but Mack and Ry had the edge, in part, because of subject matter but also because of the music outside of the words.

WHAT THE F DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED B****. DRAKE CAN’T RAP TO SAVE HIS LIFE, HE’S SO F-ING UNTALENTED, AND EVEN I’M SAYING THAT, AND I’M CANADIAN!!!!!!!!! HE DIDN’T GET NOMINATED FOR ANY GRAMMYS AND HE’S REALLY JEALOUS. LIKE BITCH YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL OUT ON OF THE MOST AWESOME RAPPERS EVER WHO ACTUALLY STANDS FOR PEOPLE’S RIGHTS RATHER THAN HAVE VIDEOS THAT PUT PEOPLE DOWN, AND WHERE THERE’S SMOKING WEED AND ALL THAT SH*T, AND TELL HIM THAT HE’S DOING SOMETHING WRONG WHEN HE WAS ONLY SAYING SORRY. HE POSTED IT ON INSTAGRAM TO SHOW THAT HE WANTED EVERYONE TO KNOW HE WAS SORRY BECAUSE HE TRULY THOUGHT THAT KENDRICK SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE AWARD. YOU F-ING HATERS JUST SHUT THE F UP AND STOP INSULTING AND HATING ON MACKLEMORE WHO IS 10000000X MORE TALENTED THAN DRAKE WHO TALKS IN HIS SONGS IF YOU CAN EVEN CALL THEM SONGS. DRAKE IS JEALOUS.

just had to get this out because I got sooooo mad right now, and I have no one to yell at…
