If you’ve seen The Wolf Of Wall Street, you probably remember that absurd scenes where Leonardo DiCaprio is so drugged out of his mind on Quaaludes and alcohol and coke and whatever else he had that day that he literally can’t walk. At least, I’m hoping you remember that scene, and that it hasn’t just blurred in with all the rest behind a dense haze of f-bombs.
Well as it turns out, any one of us could have theoretically given that performance, because the inspiration came from a YouTube video that many of us have seen — that one where the ‘Drunkest Guy Ever’ tries to get more beer at a 7-Eleven. Here’s what he told a reporter recently at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival the other day about that fateful Lemmons scene:
“A lot of the research that I did really came from watching this one video on loop. It’s called ‘The Drunkest [Guy] in the World’. It’s a man trying to get a beer, but his body doesn’t quite [work]. That was a huge inspiration to me. It’s not just the fact that he was sort of elasticated and trying to get [up], it was his motivation that was really intriguing. He had one singular goal, one that was to get a beer out of the 7-Eleven, and it took him a half an hour.”
So basically what he’s saying is that this:
Huh. The original video first came on the internet in 2009, and it’s been viewed by millions and millions of people since then. All of whom should be ashamed of themselves, because they’ve had four and a half years since then to get into a Martin Scorcese movie and snag themselves an Oscar nomination. And still no one did it until Leonardo DiCaprio.
I’m honestly surprised at you guys, but you’re lucky because I can’t stay and scold you for much longer, because I need to go home and practice my rendition of ’Charlie Bit Me’. Once I have it perfected, I think the Academy’s really gonna want a look at it.
