Last night marked Jay Leno’s final episode of The Tonight Show. I know what you’re thinking. Didn’t that happen five years ago? That was his first final episode. This is his second final episode, and apparently the goodbye gift for a talk show host’s second final episode is to have a bunch of celebrities come out and sing off-key. I’m not a fan of Jay Leno and his habit of takesies-backsies, but I am a fan of famous people pretending they know how to sing, so this was very enjoyable.
Jay Leno booked Billy Crystal as his last guest because he happened to be his first guest back in 1992. In order to give Leno a very special second goodbye, Billy got a bunch of famous people together and had them sing “So Long, Farewell” from The Sound of Music, complete with the Shut Your Von Trapp Family Singers. I’m guessing this is NBC’s way of continuing to promote their live musical months after it aired.
So what celebrities showed up to squawk out a goodbye ditty? There was Jack Black, who got the most honest line in when he sang, “If Fallon tanks, you’ll be back here next year.” Ahaha, funny. But seriously, please don’t joke about that. There was also “NBA Superstar Chris Paul,” Sheryl Crow, Jim Parsons and Carol Burnett. Then OPRAH WINFREY came out and everyone feared she’d smite them for their sins. But most importantly, Kim Kardashian tip-toed out in one of those dresses that’s tailored within an inch of its life. She made a crack (get it?) about being “the butt” of Leno’s jokes, and then you could practically see her holding out her hand to collect her check.
Let’s just thank our lucky stars that Jay didn’t sing himself. That duet with Jimmy Fallon was hard on the ears.
