Alright you guys, we have to do some real talk for a second: if Bruce Jenner is seriously transitioning from male to female, then everybody needs to lay off him. Like big time. I enjoy joking and poking fun as much as the rest of you (maybe even more, actually), but we are dipping our toes into some pretty serious ponds, and everyone needs to be aware of that.
To a certain extent, it’s a fun joke that with every passing day, Bruce becomes more like a woman. He’s growing his hair out, beginning to emphasize his facial features, wearing earrings in both ears, growing out his nails, and talking about shaving his trachea. WHAT A SILLY OLD IDIOT. Doesn’t he realize that every single one of those things makes him look and seem more feminine?
Well…yeah. He probably does. The media jokes about it enough that I can’t imagine there’s any way he’s not aware of it. And yet he hasn’t stopped wearing earrings, hasn’t cut his hair, hasn’t stopped any of the behaviors that we’re all so delightedly poking fun at. At a certain point you have to accept that this might be an intentional thing. Sure, he’s denied that his laryngeal shave has anything to do with a male to female transition (which is what it’s primarily associated with in the medical community), instead saying, “I just never liked my trachea.” But are we really gonna pretend that these are all the hilarious bumblings of a guy who doesn’t realize what a pussy he’s being? Jimmy Kimmel is.
There just comes a point where a joke has so much potential for being real that it’s not funny anymore, right? It’s just mean. If Bruce really is transitioning, that’s far from an easy process, and its made even more difficult by his status as a public figure. Pretty much every person he’s related to is enormously famous, so if he’s considering an enormous lifestyle change, there’s nowhere he can really do it that’s out of the spotlight. And even if he isn’t, it’s safe to assume that he’s making the choices he is because they make him comfortable and it’s what he wants. And that should probably be enough for us.
I’m not saying we need to be walking on eggshells around Bruce all of a sudden, because I’m sure he can handle himself. I just would like for people to be aware of the potential for verging into the inappropriate, here. It’s like walking into a quiet room and cracking, “Wow, who died?” and then finding out someone did.
All I’m saying is be smart now so you don’t have to feel like an asshole later. That’s just good sense.
