Ever since the the Boy Meets World spin-off was announced, ’90s kids have been high on nostalgia over the idea of revisiting their favorite characters. But the more I see of Girl Meets World, the more I’m realizing just how disappointing this show is bound to be. That includes this new behind-the-scenes look at the show from Access Hollywood.
My first reaction to the video was how little Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga (Danielle Fishel) have aged since the show ended. I think there was something in the famous person water in the ’90s that stopped aging. John Stamos obviously drank a lot of the stuff, as evidenced by his Benjamin Button syndrome. I also noticed that something rather strange is happening in Ben’s nose area. It’s not so obvious from straight-on, but once he turns to the side the Portia de Rossi plastic surgery alarms start going off in my head.
It doesn’t help that looking at Rowan Blanchard and Sabrina Carpenter, the titular “girl” and her Shawn-esque best friend, all I can think is that they’ll eventually become former Disney stars. As we’ve seen time and time again, “former Disney star” is a title that often comes with a lot of problems. I could maybe handle all this if it were just for the sake of an hour-long reunion special, but turning it into a whole series is looking like a worse and worse idea, at least in terms of appealing to the twenty-somethings who watched the original. I suppose a new generation might be able to appreciate it, but wouldn’t they be better served just being introduced to Boy Meets World?
