The Doo Wop Version Of ‘Timber’ Is So Classy You’ll Forget It’s A Cover Of Pitbull And Ke$ha

Postmodern Jukebox doo wop Timber by Kesha 2014

Don’t let the title of this post deceive you. I’m a total Ke$ha fan. I get her songs stuck in my head at least once a week, and I admire her for checking into rehab recently and getting herself help. And Pitbull… he wears sunglasses well, I guess? I don’t really have a lot to say about Pitbull, I’m sorry. But no one’s going to watch their video for “Timber” and describe it as “classy.” I mean, it’s a guy named after a dog breed and a girl with a dollar sign in her name. You know what is classy, though? Old stuff.

Old stuff is so classy. Put on a vintage dress and throw the word “swell” around a couple of times, and suddenly everyone you bump into is marveling at how much class and elegance you exude. And if you start singing literally any song in the style of 1950s doo wop, the world will erect a statue in your honor and title it “Class.” I’m expecting that to happen any day now for Postmodern Jukebox, a group who takes modern hits like “We Can’t Stop” and “Blurred Lines” and covers them as if they’re doo wop classics. Their latest song is “Timber,” and believe me when I say they’ve completely transformed it.

I already found the song annoyingly catchy, but in the typical earwormy pop song way. This version, arranged by Scott Bradlee and sung by lead singer Robyn Adele Anderson with backing vocals by the Tee Tones, is totally different. It’ll make you want to take up smoking, paint your nails red and put curlers in your hair. And you won’t even notice that Robyn is singing lyrics like “face down, booty up.” It just all sounds so classy and innocent sung like that. Add in a saxophone and suddenly I’m all, “Ke$ha who?” It doesn’t hurt that Robyn has an amazing voice and flawless eye makeup.

Postmodern Jukebox makes me want to take up smoking, wear a raccoon coat and call chicks “dames.”
