Gabourey Sidibe Accidentally Reminds Us That We Don’t Say ‘Tranny’ Anymore, Guys

Gabourey Sidibe blowing out a candle on AHS Coven GIFI don’t mean to be rude, all you celebrities out there, but it’s 2014 — do you think we can agree to take the word ‘tranny’ off the table? I don’t honestly know what we’re even using it for at this point, since the word ‘transsexual’ covers the same thing and isn’t derogatory.

But interestingly, just as other offensive, inappropriate, unnecessary slurs like it are being phased out, ‘tranny’ has shown surprising staying power. People use it casually, I guess without realizing that its offensive to a demographic that already endures a hefty amount of stigma in our society. At least that’s what happened to Gabourey Sidibe when she went on The Arsenio Hall Show recently to talk about American Horror Story: Covenwhich she and the cast filmed while living in New Orleans:

Gabourey: There was a bar that we would frequent and every time we’d go, when we were leaving every single time there was always like a gang of cops arresting trannies.

Audience: [Laughter]

Gabourey: Specifically trannies.

Arsenio Hall: Yeah…

Gabourey: And I don’t know what goes on with trannies but that tranny on tranny crime needs to stop!

Arsenio and audience: [Laughter]

Gabourey [chuckling]: It is tearing our nation apart!

I’m sure in her mind that was a cute story, but her use of the slur really derailed the whole thing and exposed her ignorance. Even in her apology tweets, she made it clear that she didn’t realize the word was an offensive one:

Okay, so perhaps she didn’t intend to be cruel or mean-spirited, but I think as a human being — and as a celebrity especially — you have a certain responsibility to think before you open your mouth. Doesn’t always happen, in fact it rarely does, but if this can be a situation that others can learn from, hopefully it won’t be totally in vain.

Alexis, you always manage be holier than a COW. For such a mean spirited writer you sure always are the first to judge.

        My goodness! You feel strongly.

What’s mean about me protecting a minority class?

    • My name is Alexis too…

      *Sings* The more you know…
I didn’t know the “T-word” was a slur until reading about this incident, most people still don’t know. I learned just like Gabby did that it is not okay to call a trans person “that word” it doesn’t make us stupid unless we educate ourselves and continue to use the slur in a hurtful manner. She simply did not know, it isn’t as well advocated as the “n-word” or the “r-word”. I now know not to use any of these words toward people because I read about the affect it has…

Yup! It’s great to learn from situations like this.
