30 Funny Famous People Under 30

Jennifer Lawrence that's funny(via)

Do you like funny people? I like funny people. I value funny people very highly. I also value young people very highly. I believe they are our future, and I don’t have to explain to them how to Google things. There’s nothing like finding out that one of your favorite comedians or funny actors hasn’t even reached his or her thirtieth birthday. Once you get over your painful jealousy about the fact that they’re more famous than you, it makes them so relatable.

So in honor of youth and humor and fame, let’s take a look at 30 wonderfully funny famous people who have yet to reach the big 3-0. I noticed a few things when putting this list together. One, a lot of very funny people are exactly 30 years old and therefore ineligible (I’m looking at you, Kate McKinnon). But second, most of the names that came to mind belonged to women. Sorry fellas, but I think that’s swell. I think it goes to show that there’s a new generation of women in comedy who are daring to challenge the boy’s club that seems to have existed for so long. Either that or I just think women are funnier. You decide.

This list is in alphabetical order, by the way, so nobody gets to complain that their favorite got ranked too low. That said, let me know if I missed anyone important. I have great humor radar but it’s not perfect.

1. Beck Bennett

You know those AT&T commercials with the adorable children saying adorable things? Beck Bennett is the executive asking the questions. He landed the gig after years of improv. This season he became a featured player on SNL, and the rest is history.

2. Bo Burnham

Age: 23
Claim to Fame: Stand-up

Forget turning 30, Bo Burnham isn’t even old enough to rent a car yet and he’s already a stand-up comedian. He started his satirical musical comedy career on YouTube as a teenager. He released his first EP in 2008 and has done various tours since then.

3. Aidy Bryant

Age: 26

Aidy is part of the new wave of hilarious women who make SNL worth watching every week. Before joining the cast, she performed with groups like Second City. Anyone else in the mood to watch “Girlfriends Talk Show” right now?

4. Michael Cera

Age: 25
Claim to Fame: Arrested Development

My dear George Michael Bluth. Michael Cera started his career as a soft-spoken awkward kid, and that’s pretty much what he’s been ever since. Luckily he makes that persona pretty entertaining, and he’s even stepped behind the camera. His short film last year was weirdly amazing.

5. Kat Dennings

Kat Dennings eye roll(via)

Age: 27
Claim to Fame: 2 Broke Girls

Kate Dennings has cornered the cynical, deadpan cool girl market, along with another funny lady we’ll get to in a minute. She even brings an added dose of comedy to a superhero movie with her role in Thor. And she got good reviews for her People’s Choice hosting gig! You go, Kat Dennings!

6. Clark Duke

Clark Duke The Office(via)

Age: 28
Claim to Fame: The Office

Clark started out playing a fictionalized version of himself on the web series Clark and Michael with his BFF Michael Cera. He went on to star in movies like Sex Drive, Kick-Ass and Hot Tub Time Machine, but you might recognize him as on of the new guys in the final season of The Office.

7. Lena Dunham

Age: 27
Claim to Fame: Girls

The world has a real love-hate relationship with Lena, and even if you despise her show and roll your eyes at her real-life behavior, you have to admit she can be pretty funny. And you gotta respect her for being in charge of her own show as a young woman.

8. Ronan Farrow

Age: 26

Ronan Farrow has become an Internet sensation ever since his mom Mia Farrow revealed that his father might be Frank Sinatra and not Woody Allen. He’s incredibly smart and accomplished, and he’ll show that off on his upcoming MSNBC show. He even live-tweeted the Grammys last weekend. Get obsessed.

9-10. Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson

Ages: 26 and 29
Claim to Fame: Broad City

You might be thinking we have enough shows about 20-somethings living in New York City, but think again. Broad City on Comedy Central is Amy Poehler-approved, so we’re all obligated to watch. It’s based on a web series that real-life friends Ilana and Abbi created together. Yay girl power!

11-12. Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla

Age: 26
Claim to Fame: Smosh

This comedy duo has had the most-subscribed YouTube channel three different times. Their videos have billions of views, and they now have eight Smosh-related channels. Oh, and they also have erotic fanfiction written about them. They’ve made it!

13. Anna Kendrick

Age: 28
Claim to Fame: Pitch Perfect

The entire world has a girl crush on Anna Kendrick, right? She started out in Twilight and had an Oscar nomination for Up in the Air, but it wasn’t until she showed off how aca-awesome she is in Pitch Perfect that the world really paid attention. She also happens to have a perfect Twitter account.

14. Lauren Lapkus

Age: 28
Claim to Fame: Orange is the New Black

Lauren has done stand-up and made appearances on the Chelsea Lately round table. She also starred as Dee Dee on Are You There Chelsea? and proved to be the best part of the show (to me at least). But you likely recognize her as the awkward Officer Fischer on OITNB.

15. Jennifer Lawrence

Age: 23

Do we even need to explain Jennifer Lawrence? The world is obsessed with her, to the point where she’s now facing backlash from people who think she’s overexposed or overrated. But she’s still the world’s collective best friend, so I couldn’t leave her off this list.

16. Kyle Mooney

So many of the featured players on SNL are under 30 this season, and I love it! Kyle started out doing sketch comedy with fellow featured player Beck Bennett in the group Good Neighbor. He’s also appeared on Stephen Merchant’s HBO show Hello Ladies.

17. Jay Pharoah

Jay Pharoah blew everyone away with his spot-on impressions when he started his stint on SNL in 2010. He does everyone from Jay Z to Denzel Washington. As a bonus, he finally gets to play President Obama, which really should have happened from the beginning.

18. Aubrey Plaza

You know when I said someone else had cornered the market on deadpan cool girls besides Kat Dennings? Yeah, I was talking about Aubrey Plaza. Everyone loves April Ludgate. It’s just a rule. If you want to love Aubrey even more, watch the video she made before she was famous called “Teen Hag.”

19. Issa Rae

Age: 29
Claim to Fame: Awkward Black Girl

More ladies doing it for themselves! Issa created and stars in the beloved web series Awkward Black Girl. She created the show as a way to challenge the typical portrayal of black women on television. She also has four other web shows and is developing an HBO comedy series.

20. Rico Rodriguez

Age: 15
Claim to Fame: Modern Family

Rico is the youngest person on our list, but I couldn’t resist including him because he’s managed to create such a well-defined — and dare I say iconic — character in Manny Delgado. Everybody loves Manny; it’s a law.

21. Taylor Schilling

(via)

Age: 29
Claim to Fame: Orange is the New Black

Taylor was nominated for a Golden Globe in the drama category, and even though OITNB certainly has plenty of dramatic moments, I would have put her under comedy. She’s developed a great balance of humor and pathos as Piper. Once you hear her say “Bitches gots to learn,” you’ll be in love.

22. Alia Shawkat

Age: 24
Claim to Fame: Arrested Development

Marry me, Maeby! I think Alia was the most underrated member of the Arrested cast, and she got to show off just how valuable she is in last year’s comeback season. She’s also made appearances in plenty of quirky indie movies and just remains totally cool.

23. Eden Sher

Eden Sher The Middle(via)

Age: 22
Claim to Fame: The Middle

Sue Heck on The Middle is my spirit animal. Eden Sher is the standout on an already awesome show. She nails her awkward but endlessly optimistic character, and she wears those braces like a pro.

24. Emma Stone

Age: 25
Claim to Fame: Movies

Although she’s since ventured into more serious roles in The Help and The Amazing Spider-Man, we all know and love Emma for her funny movies like Easy A and The House Bunny. And she also happens to be adorable in real life, too.

25. Cecily Strong

Age: 29
Claim to Fame: Saturday Night Live

So many SNL cast members, so little time! Cecily’s so funny (her porn star sketch with Vanessa Bayer is priceless) she even gets to host Weekend Update! Just another reason to love the ladies on that show.

26. Dreama Walker

Claim to Fame: Don’t Trust the B- in Apartment 23

You might remember when Dreama was one of Blair Waldorf’s minions on Gossip Girl, but you most likely recognize her from her role as June on Don’t Trust the B. She was an entertaining foil to Krysten Ritter’s wild party girl, but unfortunately the show was canceled before its time. RIP.

27. Brooks Wheelan

Brooks Wheelan was a stand-up comedian in Los Angeles before getting a role as a featured SNL player. He also wrote for CollegeHumor. SNL unfortunately hasn’t given him a whole lot to do on the show, but there’s a whole group of fans I noticed on Tumblr who are fighting for him to have a chance to shine.

28. Mae Whitman

… Her? That’s right, her. We loved her as Ann Veal on Arrested, and I’ve been a fan since she starred on State of Grace with Alia Shawkat. She has an amazing resume for a 25-year-old, and that includes her angsty role on Parenthood.

29. Rebel Wilson

Age: 27
Claim to Fame: Pitch Perfect

Who could resist that Australian accent? We fell in love with her as Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect and stuck with her as she hosted the MTV Movie Awards. Her new show Super Fun Night has gotten questionable reviews, but we can’t lose hope!

30. Sasheer Zamata

sasheer zamata gif

(via)

Age: 27
Claim to Fame: Saturday Night Live

SNL finally responded to criticism that their new cast members were full of white men and severely lacking in black women when they cast Sasheer Zamata. Now Kenan will no longer have to wear a dress three times a show. Sasheer just started as a featured player, so we haven’t seen everything she can do. But if you want to get an idea of how funny she is, just watch her as a hilarious Girls tour guide.
