While the whole entire world’s crushing on Macklemore (and his silent sidekick Ryan Lewis) and celebrating his success this year, I’m growing increasingly skeptical of his “kind” behavior. Which I know makes me sound like a cynical bitch, but hear me out. After beating Kendrick Lamar for the Best Rap Album Grammy last night, Macklemore texted him a heartfelt message about how he should’ve won instead.
That’s nice, right? Acknowledging that the man with more talent should’ve taken home the Grammy. Well hold your applause please.
Because after sending that heartfelt message, Macklemore posted it to his Instagram with the following caption:
My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That’s what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys
So it’s not as much heartfelt as it is a poor attempt to play modest mouse with his fans. If he really thinks Kendrick Lamar deserved that Grammy over him, he would’ve straight up handed it to him. This was nothing more than a ploy to get his fans to tell him for the umpteenth time that he’s the world’s most wonderfulest person alive. It’s kinda like giving money to the homeless….and then uploading the charitable act to Instagram. Or to bring the example closer to home, it’s like pretending you’re a tireless spokesperson for gay marriage…when you’re really just making calculated decisions that exploit the LGBT community while simultaneously enhancing your own image.
Then again, maybe I am a cynical bitch. Maybe Macklemore’s really the greatest person alive. And if that’s the case, I guess I’m the worst.
