I don’t know about you, but I always have the weird assumption that if I’ve seen a certain celebrity at enough award shows, it’s because their shelves at home are littered with trophies and they’ve won everything they’re ever nominated for.
But as I was watching The Grammys last night, I was realizing that some of those familiar faces out in the crowd had never won a single gramophone, even though they’ve been nominated pretty much every year since they first set foot on the red carpet. Just like every other award show, there are people who get passed over year after year (yes, I see you lurking over there, Leonardo DiCaprio), who you wouldn’t believe have never actually won a Grammy.
And not just current people, either! Huge, record-breaking, critically-acclaimed artists from the past remain empty-handed on the Grammy front…and kind of a lot of them, now that I’m looking into it. Prepare to get your mind blown…
1. Katy Perry
Even though she’s been nominated eleven times and broken records with Teenage Dream to become the first performer ever to have five number one singles from the same record, Katy has never won even one Grammy.
He’s consistently rated as one of the top rappers out there, and he’s been around since 1991, but even after thirteen nominations, he’s never walked away with a win.
3. The Spice Girls
Okay so maybe not the most artistically significant performers ever, but come on, they paved the way for a lot of future acts! These ladies were NEVER EVEN NOMINATED, even after their album Spice became the biggest selling girl-group album of all time.
I know. They’ve released eighteen number-one albums, eighteen number-one singles, are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and remain one of the best selling artists OF ALL TIME, and yet they were only nominated twice, and never won.
5. Snoop Dogg
He was up for Best Reggae Album last night for Reincarnated, but after losing it to Ziggy Marley, Snoop is now up to sixteen nominations without a win.
With thirteen nominations and no win, Björk is the fifth-most nominated artist without a little golden gramophone of her own.
