I love that Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak are BFFs. You don’t see a lot of genuine male/female friendships in Hollywood, and you pretty much never see it among exes. I love that they got their start together on The Office and have stayed friends ever since. I love that B.J. had a stint on The Mindy Project, and I love that they talk about each other in interviews. I just love their relationship in general and would like to be a fly on the wall during one of their hangout sessions.
So obviously I love this trailer for B.J.’s book One More Thing. Mindy stars in it with him, naturally. It’s a spoof of French New Wave films from the 1960s, with black and white and subtitles and smoking. As someone who watched a lot of those movies in college film classes, I can tell you that this is very accurate. You might think the poor dubbing is just an intentional mistake to make the parody funnier, but it’s actually authentic.
The story is that B.J. wants to impress Mindy, the girl of his dreams, who has written a book called Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, or as it’s translated into French, Is It Existentially Possible That The World Hangs Out In My Absence? So B.J. writes a book of his own inspired by his one true love Rainn Wilson (don’t worry, there are heart-shaped picture frames) and shows it off at the cafĂ©. Lots of phony intellectualism ensues, and there’s even a French “that’s what she said” joke. But (spoiler alert) if you were worried that the whole video would be subtitled and pretentious, never fear. You’ll still get to hear them talk like themselves, and that includes Mindy referring to B.J. as “Beej.” I’m in love with their love.
If you’re as charmed by this trailer as I am, buy B.J.’s book when it’s released on February 4th.
