What Selena Gomez lacks in vocal talent, she makes up for in backhanded compliments. Like her best friend Taylor Swift, she’s learned the art of speaking between the lines when giving interviews. Or as it’s better known in middle school circles, being a passive-aggressive bitch. Say nothing, but also say everything. As we know from past interviews, Selena Gomez hates Lorde. But she also hates the idea of coming off like a mean girl, so says enough to give you an idea of what she’s thinking — but not enough that she can’t back pedal out if internet responds with a WTF.
See it in action in this month’s issue of Seventeen. She’s asked about Lorde and she responds like so:
“I recently did an interview and they asked me who I thought was up-and-coming and making a difference. I said, ‘She doesn’t like me, but Lorde.’ I’m going to support her whether she likes me or not because I think she’s doing great things. I’ve never met her, but she’s extremely talented, and she has a voice that she likes to use, and I think that’s great. Some day I will see her and we’ll be cool.”
Not only does she make a point of saying that she’s said this before, but also that she’s the bigger person in this whole situation. All hail Selena Gomez, the celebrity who’s so charitable with her compliments that she’ll give them to her worst enemy. Also the celebrity who’s not just putting the ball in Lorde’s court, but rocket launching it over. After all, Lorde now has to respond by saying that she of course likes Selena Gomez and also thinks she’s super duper talented.
Well that would be what Lorde would have to do if she played by the rules. However we’re all well aware now that Lorde doesn’t. While I’m sure someone handed her the rulebook at some point last year, it’s clearly gone now. PR’s for posers, Lorde is for real. So sorry Selena, looks like you won’t be getting a backhanded compliment from her anytime soon. But maybe, if you’re lucky, she’ll one day acknowledge that she secretly plays ”Who Says” when no one else is home. Unless that’s just me who does this, in that case, forget I said anything.
