I have good news right now, and I have bad news. The good news is, if you keep reading, you’ll get to find out what it’s like to kiss Benedict Cumberbatch. But the bad news is, it comes at a cost, and a very hefty one — Sherlock season three spoilers.
You can weigh that situation out however you’d like, and I won’t judge you either way. I just wanted to make sure you had all the information beforehand, because I stumbled into the knowledge accidentally, and I still haven’t forgiven myself. SO DECIDE, CUMBERBITCHES! Do you want to live in ignorance of Bennybatch’s soft, pillowy lips, or do you want to live in ignorance of some pretty serious plot points in season three? Your call.
Ah, so I see you’ve decided to join us in knowing what the Brits know about this season, since it’s just about over for them, but hasn’t even started for us. (The premiere airs this Sunday, January 19th at 10:00pm, by the way, in case you didn’t already have that etched into your calendar in stone, like I do.) OKAY SO. Sherlock gets a girlfriend this season! I’m not gonna say when, and I’ve specifically avoided looking up exactly how that comes about, but if you’re super curious, I’ve no doubt that information is extremely available. What I will tell you, though, is that her name is Janine, and she’s played by a woman named Yasmine Akram (and you were so hoping I was going to say Martin Freeman), who tells RadioTimes.com that kissing Benedict was pretty much tops:
“It was lovely and very soft.”
This article that I’m linking to has a fair bit of information about this season’s villain as well, if you’re into that sort of thing, but I’m more interested in this GF sitch, so I’m gonna focus on that, if you don’t mind. Apparently Sherlock and his new lady love even share a bath together onscreen, although he’s been very clear in previous seasons that girlfriends are ‘not really my area.’ Apparently it’s super weird to see him being all cute and snuggly. According to Yasmine:
“[The scenes were] bound to put a few noses out of joint. Those first 20 minutes, half an hour, people are going to be like ‘Whaaaat!?’”
And most of that whaaaaaat is gonna come in the form of Cumberbitches being pissed at her, most likely, since she’s the first person in the series to be pictured getting intimate with Benedict onscreen. But regardless of any backlash, she really enjoyed the whole filming experience, saying:
“It was absolutely lovely. He doesn’t intimidate you; he was just very kind and generous.”
According to those who have seen the episodes (everyone except us), it’s not yet clear if Janine will be in future episodes (like season four!), so she’s just focusing on reassuring herself that fans ‘are not upset with me; it’s people loving him and loving the show.’
…and probably being a little bit upset with you.
