The Only 10 Movies You Have To See For Awards Season This Year

It’s that time of year again, when if you really want to be knowledgeable about award season, all of your concentration (and all of your dollars) have to go toward predicting which movies you need to see in order to win your Oscar poll. Or to sound educated in front of all your friends at a fancy cocktail party. Or to pretend like you’re a magical gypsy who can predict the Best Picture nominations. Whatever it is you do.

And that takes so much work that I’ve pretty much abandoned all hope of getting it done in previous years; even if I watch movies all year, I always seem to watch the wrong ones, and am in no way prepared for the Oscars. BUT. From being super aware this whole year, and getting sent to screeners, I began to notice a pattern — even though there are a bunch of different awards shows, they have a surprising amount of overlap.

So with that in mind, and by looking at all the nominations that have been announced so far, I’ve come up with a list of ten movies that you absolutely have to see to be prepped for the Best Picture category. Movies that have been nominated for that award (or the equivalent) in two or more categories so far. And of course I’ll be updating this list as the season goes on. But just ten! That’s pretty doable, right? To watch in the two months before the Oscars on March 2nd? I have faith in you.

Oh American Hustle. Majority of it filmed 2 miles from my house, in Worcester MA… because WooTown already looks like it’s in the 70s. :) I’ll be crossing my fingers for it!

    • Alexis Rhiannon

      Oh that’s awesome!

  • Katy Hearne

Aww, man. I was on a 10 hour flight (fml, y’all) and Blue Jasmine was one of the movie options that I totally meant to watch. Instead I read the entire first Bridget Jones book. I hate missing the chance to see a good free movie.
